From the Principal's Desk....

Dear Family Fairfax,

The first few days of spring…and we are greeted with rain and wind.  I am writing this News You Choose from sunny (believe it or not) Chicago where I have taken just a couple of days away with my family.   Though I miss my Fairfax Family, I so value times like these.  Yesterday, was World Down Syndrome Day, and as many of you know, I have two family members, now adults,  with Down Syndrome.  World Down Syndrome Day is a day that was established to not only raise awareness but also celebrate in their accomplishments and abilities:  One of my brothers-in-law actually gave five (well-rehearsed) speeches to middle-school students yesterday which is quite an accomplishment for him.  I beam with pride for our students, and I am fortunate that my family makes me so proud as well.  If everyone blooms where they are planted, then the world would be filled with flowers, right?

Your PTSA is working hard, and Tuesday’s meeting was proof of that.  I so appreciate hearing and seeing all the ways that they consistently support our school and students, from parent programs to student-awards programs, helping with the food-pantry start up, and finding funds to support our ELL (English Language Learners) in a field trip to Washington DC.  They are living proof of community, and if you haven’t had the chance to join or participate, I encourage you to do so.   We. Need. You.

As our students’ beautiful artwork is being taken down from display at Northern Virginia Community College, we have spring sports well underway.  Here is to a successful season for our students, staff, and families!  I am holding my breath for the return of our chorus, orchestra and band students who are currently in Orlando—I am proud that they have opportunities like these, but of course, always anxious to get them safely home.

Wishing you a most restful weekend,

Erin B. Lenart

Former marketing student and DECA officer, Tara Rohfling shared DSANV (The Down Syndrome Association of Northern Virginia) “Rock Your Socks” campaign which supports and helps awareness for National Down Syndrome Day, March 21.   Tara donated pairs of  colorful socks with DSANV statement of support.

This day is for family, friends, and community to show support for people with Down Syndrome so they can achieve their full potential and lead full lives.  Tara and her Dad became involved with the organization because her Dad had an uncle with Down Syndrome.

Students learned:

DSANV helps the Down Syndrome community by...

  • Helping families adjust to the birth of a child with Down syndrome
  • Providing individuals with Down syndrome and their families with support and resources
  • Providing social and educational events for individuals with Down syndrome and their families
  • Increasing community awareness of the capabilities and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome
  • Providing financial support to families in need
  • Supporting local organizations that provide services to individuals with Down syndrome
