Four FCPS Students Named 2019 Coca-Cola Scholars

Four Fairfax County Public Schools students are among 150 students nationwide named 2019 Coca-Cola Scholars. Students are selected based on superior leadership, service, academics, and serving as a change agent to positively affect others in the community.

Each of the winners will receive a $20,000 college scholarship and attend Scholars Weekend April 4-7 in Atlanta.

Calendar Reminder


Calendar Reminder: April 5 Is a Student Holiday; Spring Break Is April 15-19     

As a reminder, Friday, April 5, is a teacher workday and a holiday for students. The last day of the third quarter is April 4. Classes will resume on Monday, April 8.

FCPS Cares of the Month for February

FCPS Cares is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. All FCPS Cares submissions were reviewed and six winners were selected for the month of February—one for each region and the central office—to receive extra recognition for their work. They are:

  • Central Office: Aaron Curtis, Andre Marshall, and Ronnie Presley, Department of Financial Services, Forte Center, Warehouse.
  • Region 1: Stephen Alexander, Colvin Run Elementary School.
  • Region 2: Karen Allison, Falls Church High School.
  • Region 3: Khaled Noori, Twain Middle School.
  • Region 4: Adam Erbrecht, Liberty Middle School.
  • Region 5: Michele Sullivan, Mantua Elementary School.

2019 Science Fair


Twelve Students Win Grand Prize Awards in 2019 Fairfax County Regional Science and Engineering Fair

Twelve students earned grand prize awards at the 64th annual Fairfax County Regional Science and Engineering Fair held March 15-17 at Robinson Secondary School.

New Graduation Seal for Excellence in Science and the Environment Available for Students Who Entered 9th Grade in 2018-19 and Beyond

The Virginia Board of Education has announced a new graduation seal for students who entered ninth grade in 2018-19 and beyond. The Seal for Excellence in Science and the Environment will be awarded to students who complete the requirements for a Standard or Advanced Studies Diploma, complete at least three different first-level board-approved laboratory science courses, and at least one rigorous advanced-level or postsecondary laboratory science course (each with a grade of “B” or higher).

Additionally, students must complete laboratory or field-science research and present that research in a formal, juried setting, and complete at least 50 hours of voluntary participation in community service or extracurricular activities that involve the application of science such as environmental monitoring, protection, management, or restoration.

Students may track service participation hours through x2VOL, a service learning platform that can be accessed by students through their FCPS 24-7 Learning accounts. Families may find more information about x2VOL and Service Learning at the FCPS Service Learning website.

Sports Roundup: FCPS Winter 2019 Virginia High School League State Sports Champions

FCPS teams had a great 2018-19 winter sports season with four teams and 24 individuals winning Class 6 Virginia High School League state championships. See who won 2019 VHSL winter state championships


Attention Parents of Middle School Students–College Financial Aid Awareness Workshops to Be Held in March and April

College Access Fairfax is holding Financial Awareness workshops to help middle school parents get a jump on understanding the financial aid process for post-secondary education. The program will provide general information on what financial aid is, how it is determined and what parents can do now to prepare. The workshops are held from 7 to 9 p.m. on:

  • March 28 at Herndon Middle School.
  • April 4 at Key Middle School.
  • April 8 at South County Middle School.
  • April 10 at Jackson Middle School.
  • April 24 at Lanier Middle School.
  • April 25 at Whitman Middle School.

Darrell Haley


Video: Where Are They Now? Meet FCPS Graduate Darrell Haley

Fairfax County Police Officer Darrell Haley was born and raised in Fairfax County and is a graduate of Fairfax County Public Schools.

After being inspired as a child to become a police officer, Darrell enrolled in criminal justice classes at Falls Church Academy to further his knowledge and interest in the field. He now serves and protects the community that raised him and is proud to be an officer in the Fairfax County Police Department. Get to know Darrell Haley


High School Students Invited to Fairfax County 2019 Teen Job Fairs: West Springfield High School to Host on March 23

Fairfax County high school students looking for their first part-time job, summer and seasonal job opportunities, or who want more information about potential career pathways are invited to attend one of six upcoming teen job fairs and resume building workshops in Fairfax County. Local businesses and agencies will be on hand to offer a range of opportunities including part-time employment, internships, and volunteer work for prospective students.

Volunteer opportunities and resume building workshops will be available for younger students. Free booth spaces are provided to local businesses. The next two job fairs will be held on March 23 at West Springfield High School from 10 a.m. to noon, and on Friday, April 5, at Chantilly School from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Kindergarten


2019-20 Kindergarten Registration

Will your child turn five years old by September 30? If so, contact your child’s school to make arrangements for kindergarten enrollment. Most schools begin getting information together now for parents of incoming kindergartners, and many host an orientation or open house. All kindergarten programs are full-day and located in FCPS elementary schools.

Check your school’s webpage or contact the school directly for specific enrollment information and dates of orientation that typically occur between mid-March and the end of June.
