At this point all students have had an opportunity to complete their schedule requests for the 2019-2020 school year. Over the next two weeks, administration will be deciding how many teachers are needed for each course that is being taught next year. To ensure that we have appropriate numbers, please review your son/daughter’s requested schedule in SIS ParentVue or StudentVue. Once we have made staffing decisions, some courses will be full. Since we will not be able to add additional students to full courses, now is the time to get selections made correctly while everything is still available. Contact your counselor by email with any schedule change requests. Please do this by March 29. If no changes are needed, you do not need to contact the counselor.
This spring, students in Virginia high schools will take fewer Standards of Learning (SOL) tests than in the past as a result in changes from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Students who are enrolled in a high school SOL course are now only required to take the SOL test if they need the assessment to fulfill:
- Federal participation requirements (one SOL test for mathematics, reading, and biology taken during grades 9-12); and/or
- Content area verified credit requirements for graduation, based on the student’s ninth grade entry year and the diploma type the student is pursuing.
All students who entered high school in 2017-18 or prior are required to earn one (1) “student-selected” verified credit beyond those needed for specific content areas. The number of assessments students have available as options for student-selected tests each year depends on their current course enrollment and what verified credits they have already earned from previous courses. During course registration, counselors discussed student-selected SOL options with affected students. In the coming weeks, you will receive your student’s testing plan for this spring, including student-selected SOL tests, and how you can be involved in testing decisions. When you receive this plan, you are encouraged to talk with your student about their upcoming tests. You can find additional information on student-selected tests at this webpage: https://www.fcps.edu/node/37589. If you have questions or concerns about testing plans, please contact your student’s school counselor. For questions about SOL testing changes from the VDOE, you may contact Sara Wheeler at sewheeler@fcps.edu
We are excited to offer our seniors, for the third year, the Highlander Internship Program (HIP)! HIP is an opportunity for students to explore a career of interest, which could help shape college and career planning. Eligible seniors will spend one week (May 20-24) at their internship sites and will present their experiences at the HIP fair on May 30th. Students are encouraged to reach out to potential HIP hosts to secure their own opportunity, however, Mrs. Venos is keeping a list of HIP sponsors for students who need extra assistance. Applications can be turned in between March 27th and April 1st. All details, including the application, can be found here: https://mcleanhs.fcps.edu/student-life-activities/senior-events
The All-Night Graduation Party (ANGP) will be held on Monday, June 3rd from 11 p.m. - 5 a.m. at Spring Hill Recreation Center. Driver Education Certification Completion – 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm - Auditorium
The state of Virginia requires all 10th grade students and their parent/guardian to attend a 90-minute traffic safety program entitled Partners for Safe Teen Driving as part of the classroom driver education instruction. This condition must be met before a student will receive a Driver Education Certificate of Completion (DEC-1 card).
The last date for this year's presentations are:
Monday, April 22
Attendance for all current 10th grade health & PE students is MANDATORY at one of these presentations in order to obtain their completion card for Driver Education. Students must attend with a parent or guardian. (Parents/guardians, please bring a photo ID with you to the presentation.) The doors are shut and locked at 6:30 p.m., so please plan to arrive early so that you are not locked out of presentation. Current 10th grade students do not need to pre-register. If you are not a current 10th grade Health & PE student, you must preregister and pay for this presentation. Registration information can be found on the FCPS ACE website. (https://aceclasses.fcps.edu/) ATTENDANCE AT THIS PRESENTATION MUST BE IN FCPS. NO PRESENTATIONS AT OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS WILL FULFILL THIS REQUIREMENT.
If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Vivacqua - DJVivacqua@fcps.edu
