Presentation by Holocaust Survivor
On Monday, March 25th, W.T. Woodson is honored to once again host Ms. Irene Weiss, a local survivor of Auschwitz with personal ties to our Cavalier community.
Since sophomores learn about the Holocaust in Social Studies, and read Elie Wiesel’s memoir "Night," in English, an invitation has been extended to all 10th graders to attend her presentation and hear her first-person account of survival during this bleak time in history.
A prominent speaker on the Holocaust, Ms. Weiss’ current mission is to remind us of the past through her presentation. This valuable opportunity will not only provide students with a chance to draw parallels between two core courses, but it will also afford a rare chance to bring history to life. The presentation will occur during our regularly scheduled return periods (5a/b), and students will be marked excused in SIS. Due to the seating capacity of the venue, this presentation is only open to sophomores. Students will be prepped through their English classes regarding the nature of this event as well as the proper decorum warranted for such a presentation. A question and answer session will follow her remarks.
For any parent(s) or guardian(s) wishing to opt their student out of this presentation, an Opt-Out Form was emailed to 10th grade parents earlier today and is due back by Monday, March 18th. Once the form is submitted to the Main Office, your student will then be assigned to an alternative activity/location during this period.

Tony Hoffman will be at Woodson to talk about anxiety, vaping, and drug use on Wednesday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m.
WT Woodson Administration and PTSO are co-sponsoring the following event:
Come hear Tony Hoffman speak about a specific “choice” that changed his life forever. Often times, individuals may think that small, and insignificant choices have no impact on their lives.
Tony walks audiences through a candid set of choices, attitudes, and thought processes that lead him to his first drug. He details his mental health struggles and encourages his audience that it's okay to have anxiety, depression or suicidal thoughts but we must take action and tell someone. He believes we find healing when we begin doing the work and not keeping it to ourselves. He recalls picking up marijuana for the first time, the small choice he made that opened up the door for prescription painkiller and heroin abuse. It was that choice, the small, and at that time insignificant decision that changed his life forever. As Tony reaches the climax of his life experiences, audiences learn how that choice ultimately left him hopeless, homeless, and in a state of despair, while he suffered with substance-abuse addiction. With all the twist and turns in Tony’s life, he is able to leave his audience with a new sense of hope and empowerment.
Tony speaks of overcoming, and how his new way of thinking and choice-making allowed him to become a professional athlete, Olympic coach at the Rio Olympic Games, and a successful business owner who is dedicated to bettering his community. Click here to learn more about Tony Hoffman.
Students will hear Mr. Hoffman during returns and parents are invited that evening at 7:00 p.m. to hear his message.

Course Requests for 2019-2020
All students have had an opportunity to complete academic advising for the 2019-2020 school year. Staffing for next year’s courses is dependent on student course selections.
To ensure that we have accurate course registration numbers, please review your child’s requested schedule in SIS ParentVue or StudentVue (click “Course Request” on the menu on the left hand side).
Contact your child’s school counselor by email with any schedule change requests. Please do this as soon as possible. If no changes are needed, you do not need to contact the counselor. If your child applied for an academy class, he/she will be notified of the academy’s decision in the beginning of April. If accepted, course changes, including adding the academy class to your child’s course request list, will be made at that time. Friday, May 31st will be the last day to make course selection changes for the 2019-2020 school year.

Upcoming Pyramid Art Show
The Woodson Fine Arts Department would like to extend an invitation to you to join us for our Annual Pyramid Art Show Reception on Wednesday, April 3rd from 6-8:00 p.m. Artwork will be on display in our Auxiliary Gym and Cavalier Hall.
The Art Show showcases work from all schools in our pyramid and represents artists in grades K-12. Advanced Placement and Level 4 artists create mini-galleries to share complete bodies of work. Our students work in many media including analog and digital photography, ceramics, sculpture, digital art, animation, printmaking, painting, and drawing.
In between enjoying the artwork, visitors can grab a bite to eat at one of the available food trucks on site and peruse small student-made artworks for sale. As always, we’ll raffle off our famous hand-painted furniture.
Our students have worked so hard this school year to put together this show and they (and we!) would be so honored to welcome you to this event.
Scholastic Art National Medal Award
Fairfax County Public Schools students earned 21 national medals in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program. One of the four students that earned Gold Medals in the national competition was Woodson's own Rosalyn Park, who also received an American Visions Medal for her mixed media submission.
National medalists will be celebrated at an award ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June. Select national award winning work will be included in an exhibition in New York, and a traveling exhibition over the coming year.
A complete list of award winners can be found on the FCPS website.
Rosalyn Park is one of only 4 students from FCPS to win a National Gold Medal in the Scholastic Art Awards. She also received an American Visions Medal. Her winning artwork will be included in a traveling exhibition across the country, and Rosalyn and her family are invited to a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in NYC in June.
Spring Blood Drive
Mark your calendar for the upcoming Spring blood drive on Wednesday, April 10th in the Aux Gym. To sign up, go to Room G106 or visit the tables between cafeterias during lunches.
The Key Club is sponsoring the drive. Students are required to be at least 16 years of age and weigh at least 110lbs. All students are also required to have a parental consent form signed. Inova needs 250 units a day, just for regular needs in this area, so we are hoping to supply a large amount of those units! The Attendance Office will be monitoring students’ attendance.
April is Month of the Military Child (MOMC)
Wednesday, April 10th is Purple UP Day! This is a national day of recognition to show support for military youth and families by wearing purple. Why purple? Purple is the color of all the service colors blended together.
PTSO Directory Distribution
A big THANK YOU to the volunteers who helped distribute directories at lunches this week. If you or your student did not pick up the directory, never fear, you will be able to pick up your directory at a volunteer in a home in your neighborhood. Please read next week's PTSO WeMail (sign up below if you are not receiving it) to choose your pickup location.
We still need a number of volunteers to have directories available for pickup at their homes (except for neighborhoods that feed Mantua ES or Canterbury Woods ES). If you are able to help, and are a PTSO member, please signup here. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094eada82ca64-ptso1
