New Testing Regulation
Parents of Juniors and Seniors,
This spring, students in Virginia high schools will take fewer Standards of Learning (SOL) tests than in the past as a result in changes from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Students who are enrolled in a high school SOL course are now only required to take the SOL test if they need the assessment to fulfill:
- Federal participation requirements (one SOL test for mathematics, reading, and biology taken during grades 9-12); and/or
- Content area verified credit requirements for graduation, based on the student’s ninth grade entry year and the diploma type the student is pursuing.
Because your child entered ninth grade for the first time in 2017-18 or prior, an additional change applies to SOL testing this spring. All students who entered high school in 2017-18 or prior are required to earn one (1) “student-selected” verified credit beyond those needed for specific content areas. The number of assessments students have available as options for student-selected tests each year depends on their current course enrollment and what verified credits they have already earned from previous courses. Some students may not have any student-selected tests available for the year. Other students may have one (1), two (2), three (3), or more tests that could fulfill the student-selected verified credit graduation requirement.
On Monday in Jag 8, your child received specific information on your student’s SOL testing plan for this spring, including student-selected SOL tests, and how you can be involved in testing decisions. When you receive this plan, you are encouraged to talk with your student about their upcoming tests.
Please be aware of the following important points for your information.
- If your student still needs the student-selected credit to graduate, you and your student may provide input on which of these test(s) your student will take. School staff will work to ensure final testing plans do not limit students’ opportunities to earn verified credits for graduation.
- If your student will be taking two (2) or more student-selected SOL tests this spring, only one passing student-selected test result to appear in the student record. School staff will monitor student-selected test results and make every effort to cancel upcoming student-selected tests once a student earns a passing score. However, there may be cases when the earlier result is not available in time to adjust the testing schedule, and a student may inadvertently take a test that is not required. In these situations, the VDOE will remove the extra student-selected test result from the student record, and the score will not appear in final score reports.
Questions should be directed to your child’s school counselor.
