Glasgow Community:
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I am so proud to work with such a talented staff. At Glasgow, our teachers are collaborative, reflective and “committed to lifelong learning.” Together, we support professional learning using formative walkthroughs and a Personalized PD document. I wanted to share with you a few highlights of teachers answering the question, “How has your teaching changed so far as a result of the walkthroughs and observations?”
English Teacher - My teaching has become more purposeful and efficient during both the planning process and actual lesson execution. I have been working diligently to model my thinking in a clear, concise manner.
Science Teacher - I have focused on increasing student participation and this process has allowed me to more effectively facilitate their learning. Outlining their tasks has really helped keep students engaged with their work with little to no downtime, and the discussion rubric seemed to help increase participation within groups.
Civics Teacher - Always asking myself “what are they thinking, how do you know”. Could the students explain to you why that answer is correct? Keeping these ideas in the back of my mind while I am teaching. Providing opportunities for students to explain their thinking.
Math Teacher - The walkthroughs/observations have allowed my team teacher and I to think more deeply about activities and strategies that will engage students more deeply in the content. We have been pushed to think about how to structure and scaffold activities so all students can engage in the material, despite the varied levels of understanding of each new skill taught.

Getting Ready For Next Year
2019-2020 Course Registration for Rising 6th Graders - Glasgow Student Service Department is visiting our feeder elementary schools to deliver an elementary-to-middle school transition lesson. The lesson will consist of a PowerPoint presentation and video, which highlights the day in the life of a Glasgow student. Our mission is to reduce students’ level of anxiety regarding the transition, deliver valuable information about Glasgow, and provide tools/resources to make the transition to middle school smooth and successful. 6th Grade Dance: March 21, 2:20-4:40 - The annual 6th grade dance is after school on Thursday. The event is low key, no need to dress up. The cost is $5 and includes: Ticket, Soda, Pizza, Candy, carrots and fun times! Dance wristbands will be sold before school in the Lecture Hall from 7:10-7:25 and then during all lunches. SGA Spirit Week: March 25-29 - Celebrate Student Government Association Spirit Week. Check back next week as we will post the daily themes for the week.
Hoop It Up: March 29, 6-9pm - Volunteers are needed at Glasgow’s annual basketball extravaganza! This is a fabulous event for the whole community, coordinated by dedicated Glasgow staff and the PTA. Glasgow students from each grade will play Glasgow teachers for fun and bragging rights.

Glasgow Goodies
Superior Ratings for Glasgow Bands at District Assessment - This past weekend, March 8 and 9, our Glasgow Symphonic Band and Chamber Winds, under the direction of Tamara Freeman and Andrew Sharrock performed at District Band Assessment, earning ratings of Superior with both ensembles!
Superior is the highest rating that can be awarded to a performing group. The ratings are determined by adjudicators from around the country, who are considered to be some of the best middle school band teachers around. Of the over 30 bands in attendance, only 5 bands took home Superior ratings. Additionally, this was the first time in Glasgow’s history that two bands earned Superior ratings at Assessment. This is quite the accomplishment for our band program. We are incredibly proud of all the work our band students have been doing, so please give a warm congratulations to them!
High Honors at District 10 Orchestra Assessment - The Glasgow Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras performed at the District 10 Orchestra Assessment on Saturday, March 16. Symphonic Orchestra earned a rating of “II” – Excellent. Chamber Orchestra earned a “I” – Superior. Students in both orchestras did a wonderful job of representing Glasgow and our Panther Principles. They were polite, focused, and well-behaved through the entire cycle of storage room, warm-up, stage and sight-reading. We have a lot to be proud of in these students.
Glagow Students Present at TJHSST Invitational Science Fair - Congrats to Lucy Shaw, Misha Speede, Victoria Bujoreanu who presented at the TJHSST Invitational Science Fair this Saturday. They designed an app "Helping Hands" that connects teens with jobs in their neighborhood.
Glasgow PTA Meeting - Special thanks to Nonye Oladimeji, Glasgow's Middle Years Program Coordinator and Jennifer Kresse-Rodriguez, IB Coordinator at Justice High School for presenting on the International Baccalaureate program at last week's PTA Meeting. Yearbook Class Needs Photos of Your Child Outside of School! - The yearbook staff wants to see our students and staff engaged in an activity outside of school. If you traveled to an exciting location (includes vacation destinations) or play sports outside of school, we want a picture! You can also include pictures of helping the community or attending a play, movie, evening school event, etc. Be creative and send those pictures to the yearbook staff!
To submit pictures, you can give them to a yearbook staff member or drop them off to Mr. Perella in room F226. In order to make sure we return the picture to you, please put your picture in an envelope with the following information:
* First and last name
* Panther Time teacher
* Brief description of when and where the picture was taken.

Important Information
After School Program Cancelled: March 21 - All after-school activities including ASAP will be cancelled this Thursday, March 21 due to the 6th grade dance. All other students will be directed to kiss & ride or their bus once the bell rings. If you have any questions please contact, After-School Specialist, Aaron Cannon at acannon@fcps.edu.
Family Engagement Survey - Fairfax County Public Schools is conducting a survey March 24 - April 12, 2019 to gather information about family engagement in our schools. Relationships are important to us, and your opinion is critical to help us support your engagement in your child’s education. Your feedback will also help us determine how well we are reaching the goals for Caring Culture we have set in our Strategic Plan. Survey translations will be made available, and the survey can be taken on electronic devices, including smartphones.
2019-2020 Course Registration for Rising 7th Graders - Glasgow Student Services has met with most 7th grade students to register them for next year’s courses! Counselors met one-on-one with each student to review course options and complete the course selection form. Your student should have brought home a copy of their selections for you to sign and return within three days. In addition, students learned about course options in Panther Time. Students explored the kinds of classes they can take, the difference between general education and honors classes, and what choices they have for electives. After reviewing the information students completed a “think sheet” to practice selecting their classes.
Please note that all course request changes are due by April 12, 2019. Finalizing requests by this date allows us to invest in staffing and resources based on students’ needs and interests. We will be finalizing schedules and placements throughout the late Spring and summer months.
Celebrating Kindness at Glasgow - As a school we are celebrating Kindness Month in the upcoming weeks for the rest of the month of February and March. Teachers and staff are encouraged to pass out as many Kindness panther cards as possible to our deserving KIND students. As per usual, students will be able to trade in their panther cards to our Panther Stores for a prize but in addition they will also be entered into a raffle to win a special kindness prize. Only Panther Cards with the ‘Kindness’ Panther quality circled will be entered into this raffle.

The Women is a 1936 serio-comic play by Clare Boothe Luce that depicts the world of the 1930’s from a woman’s point-of-view. It is full of fast-paced dialogue and a cast of interesting and well-developed characters. It is rumored that it was written as a tirade against the rich and ridiculous ladies of 1930’s Park Avenue, the well to-do of New York, highlighting their weaknesses; the primary character, Mary Haines, being led by friends who do not even consider what is best for her. It touches on the definition of real friendship, differences in class, enduring love, betrayal in all its forms, justified revenge, and forgiveness.
