Last weekend Oak Hill was represented by eight teams in the regional Odyssey of the Mind tournament. Our teams worked all year to prepare for this creative problem-solving competition where they acted, painted, built structures, and much more. For some of the groups, this was their first time, while for others it was the product of several years learning to work and grow together as teams. Huge kudos to our own Mrs. Wagner for finishing both 1st for Opposites Distract and 2nd place for Leonardo da Vinci’s Workshop with her two teams; they will be advancing to the VA State tournament along with the 2nd place team for Structure Toss! Way to go Odyssey of the Mind Wolves—each and every one of you worked really hard this year representing Oak Hill Elementary!

First grade students hard at work researching for their Virginia Ad Campaign PBL.
Recently several of our teachers had the opportunity to attend an FCPS Share Fair with other teachers around the county to share the amazing Project Based Learning projects that our students have been working on throughout the year. This was a great opportunity to not only showcase our students’ amazing projects, but to bring back new ideas for future projects. Oak Hill has committed to giving every student the opportunity to participate in at least two PBL’s per school year. These projects are not only engaging for students, but they are an excellent vehicle for teaching students to collaborate, communicate, to be goal directed and resilient, and to be creative and critical thinkers. The process can be messy, but the learning tends to be powerful and deep. Ask your student about one of the PBLs they participated in this year. You’ve probably already seen one of their finished products, students are usually VERY proud of the work they create during these projects.
