This week our students have enjoyed reviewing the OTHER PEOPLE MATTER Mindset, which reminds the students that the reason they're learning to see these character strengths in themselves and others is to build positive relationships.
Next week we are excited to learn about LOVE OF LEARNING which means that you master new topics on your own or in school.
The Colin Powell SCA and Emily’s Hope invite our community to join us at our annual Karaoke Night next Friday night! All proceeds from the event will go directly to the training and care of a service dog for a local wounded veteran through K9 Caring Angels’ Warrior Angel program. Admission is $3 per person, and we will have pizza, drinks, snacks and Rita’s Ice available for purchase. Doors open to the CPES Stage at 5:30 pm, with singing starting right away and the pizza arriving at 6 pm. It was such a success last year that we are bringing back our popular photo booth this year, and we are going to have some special 4 pawed visitors for a dog kissing booth! Please note that there will be very well trained dogs from K9 Caring Angels in attendance at the event. Come prepared for a night of singing, community, and fun as we support a great cause. For more information about K9 Caring Angels, please go to https://k-9caringangels.org/. For any questions, about the event, please contact Laura Senturia (lesenturia@fcps.edu).
The Colin Powell SCA and our school based charity, Emily’s Hope, are excited to announce our Spring fundraiser supporting K9 Caring Angels. Every dollar raised will go directly to the specialized training and care of a service dog for a local wounded veteran. Each classroom will have a collection box, and cash and checks (payable to Emily’s Hope) will be accepted. While we know that money can be tight, we hope you and your child can talk about this important cause and decide together what your family can give. Every dollar helps! Our SCA has set a goal of $10,000, which will go towards the specialized training of a service dog for one of the many deserving local veterans who are waiting for a dog to help them effectively and fully return to civilian life.
So far we raised $1,622.90 towards our goal. Mrs. Luerrsen, Mrs. Baugh, and Ms. Pendergrass are once again going to accept our SCA challenge and will reward the school with a mystery bucket challenge if we reach our goal. Does your child want to see our principals get something dumped over their heads? I know we can do it!!
Don’t forget that March 15th is the day to Dress Like a Rock Star. Wear your favorite rock star outfit, glam hair, and be ready to rock at school AND come to Karaoke Night that night.
For more information about K9 Caring Angels, please go to https://k-9caringangels.org/. If you have any questions about the fundraiser or the events, please contact Laura Senturia (lesenturia@fcps.edu).

In Fairfax County schools, county agencies and families are working together to create an environment where children and youth can safely learn, work, and play. Similar to our message containing information about the 13 Reasons Why NETFLIX program and the Blue Whale Challenge, we are sending this communication to alert you to a recent rise in new games and social media challenges that encourage young people to participate in harmful behavior.
One example of this is a potentially harmful game called the “Momo Challenge" that has reportedly been posted on different social media platforms to include WhatsApp and assigns players a series of progressively more intense tasks, to include self-harm. It is important to note that the Momo Challenge is a hoax that has received a significant amount of media attention.
This hoax has been seen across the United States in recent months, targeting primarily elementary aged children. Vigilant parents and guardians in Fairfax County have also reported seeing information about the Momo Challenge or similar games on their children's phones and have alerted school authorities.
Please talk to your child about this type of internet hoax, and check his or her phone or other device for signs of an app or communications with anyone telling them to do specific tasks. This provides an excellent opportunity to remind your child of best practices for internet safety and digital citizenship:
- Remind your child information shared on social media is not always true and how quickly misinformation can create a panic online.
- Children should never engage in conversations with strangers online.
- Be aware of the sites and apps your children are using and know their usernames and passwords.
- Turn off suggested autoplay on videos to stop children from viewing content they have not selected, and you have not approved.
- If appropriate, tell your children that Momo is not real and will not hurt them.
- Encourage open dialogue with them around any concerns.
FCPS has additional resources available on this website: https://www.fcps.edu/node/32086. If you have concerns about your child, please contact your school counselor.
