HES International Night

Dear Herndon ES Families and Community,

Our annual International Night is right around the corner on Friday, March 15th, 6-8 pm.  This is one of the students' favorite evenings!  There will be a parade, entertainment, hands-on activities, cultural artifacts, finger food, and much more.  Dress up in your native/ cultural attire and join in!

Please encourage your child to decorate the paper doll templates that went home and return by Monday, March 11. These will be hung around the school and the kids love to see theirs on the wall!

PTA Board Needs Secretary & Treasurer for 2019-20

Two important positions are open for the 2019-2020 school year on the HES PTA Board. We need people to step up and volunteer to serve as Secretary and Treasurer. These are vital roles in helping the PTA run effectively. The Secretary is responsible for all PTA communications, social media, calendar and website. The Treasurer is responsible for all the financial dealings of the PTA, preparing the budget, managing accounts, and working with the CPA to file taxes.

These are big jobs, but they come with big benefits. Serving in the PTA gives you a close-up perspective on how the school works and allows you to have a say in what the PTA does. You will make a meaningful difference to every child at HES.

If you have any questions or want more information about these positions, please contact Tiana Page (herdonptasecretary@gmail.com) or Sarah Hobson (herndonptatreasurer@gmail.com). You can also contact PTA President Janice Young-Peele (herndonptapresident@gmail.com).

The PTA needs you!

Hooray for Box Tops!

Thank YOU! We just mailed off our Box Tops Spring submission and we earned $210 for the school since November! That also means we are only $40 away from earning 15 minutes of extra recess for the students. Keep em’ coming!

Whooo's Reading UPDATE

Whooo's Reading had an amazing first week. We've already had more $1,000 in pledges and HES students have read more than 18,000 minutes! Way to go, readers!

Jennifer Blend

Meet General Music Teacher, Jennifer Blend!

This is my 18th year teaching music in public schools. I graduated from James Madison University with my Bachelor’s degree in Music Education in 2000 and then earned my Master’s degree at George Mason University with an emphasis on Kodaly training, a method of music education for young students, in 2011. I have served many community roles in this county including: All County Chorus Festival co-chair, President of Fairfax General Music Educators Association, and taught courses in the Fairfax Academy for our colleagues. This is my seventh year teaching at Herndon ES and so glad to sing and make music with the families at Herndon! Recently I had a wonderful addition to my family, Koraline Blend was born on October 31, 2018 and the Herndon family has been very supportive and excited with our little bundle of joy!

A message from FCPS

In Fairfax County schools, county agencies and families are working together to create an environment where children and youth can safely learn, work, and play. Similar to our message containing information about the 13 Reasons Why NETFLIX program and the Blue Whale Challenge, we are sending this communication to alert you to a recent rise in new games and social media challenges that encourage young people to participate in harmful behavior.

One example of this is a potentially harmful game called the “Momo Challenge" that has reportedly been posted on different social media platforms to include WhatsApp and assigns players a series of progressively more intense tasks, to include self-harm. It is important to note that the Momo Challenge is a hoax that has received a significant amount of media attention.

This hoax has been seen across the United States in recent months, targeting primarily elementary aged children. Vigilant parents and guardians in Fairfax County have also reported seeing information about the Momo Challenge or similar games on their children's phones and have alerted school authorities.

Please talk to your child about this type of internet hoax, and check his or her phone or other device for signs of an app or communications with anyone telling them to do specific tasks. This provides an excellent opportunity to remind your child of best practices for internet safety and digital citizenship:

  • Remind your child information shared on social media is not always true and how quickly misinformation can create a panic online.
  • Children should never engage in conversations with strangers online.
  • Be aware of the sites and apps your children are using and know their usernames and passwords.
  • Turn off suggested autoplay on videos to stop children from viewing content they have not selected, and you have not approved.
  • If appropriate, tell your children that Momo is not real and will not hurt them.
  • Encourage open dialogue with them around any concerns.

FCPS has additional resources available on this website: https://www.fcps.edu/node/32086. If you have concerns about your child, please contact your school counselor. Please be aware that a number of mental health resources are available, including Fairfax County Public School resources: School Counseling Services at 571-423- 4420, School Psychology Services at 571-423-4250, and School Social Work Services at 571-423-4300 and Fairfax County resources: Crisis Link Hotline at 703-527-4077, Merrifield Emergency Services 703-573-5679 (available 24/7) or Entry and Referral during business hours at 703-383-8500. The Fairfax County Police Department non-emergency number is 703-691-2131.
