March 20th Panther Press

Dear Spring Hill Families,

It’s been so fun to see our Spring Hill spirit this week! I’m looking forward to our Cake Decorating Contest on Friday and our annual Fun Fair on Saturday!

Please review the following for the latest updates!

Vision Statement

Spring Hill is working on revising our vision statement to better reflect our school and community goals and to better align with FCPS' Portrait of a Graduate. We wanted to reach out to our community to provide feedback on the current draft of this new vision statement which was crafted with input from the entire Spring Hill faculty. Please share your thoughts on the form linked below. We appreciate your candid input.

Our Vision: "Spring Hill is an international and welcoming community where all learners come to grow.  We foster joy and a love of learning through rigorous, inclusive, and innovative learning experiences to elevate global thinkers for their future.  #elevate"

Principal Evaluation

As a first year principal, part of the evaluation process comes from survey data collected from staff and parents, identifying areas of strength and growth as I continue this path of life-long learning. I wanted to share this information regarding the process, so you can be prepared to receive the survey.

All Spring Hill parents will be contacted through email or text message with a link to the FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form Online. The survey will be collected online between March 13 and March 27.

This survey is part of the Performance Evaluation Program and offers parents an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various issues related to our school. These issues include instructional leadership, school climate, human resources management, organizational management, communication and community relations and professionalism.

Kiss & Ride

kiss and ride

Kiss-N-Ride Students: If you are a Kiss-N-Ride family, please make sure that prior to arrival, your child is ready to exit the car. In order to have a smooth flowing kiss-n-ride circle, students should be prepared to exit the car immediately after you have stopped. Please follow the directions of the staff and patrols – if they wave you on, please move forward as far as you can prior to letting your child out of the car. We are going to use as much of the curve of the sidewalk as possible, so your child may have to walk a little to get into the building.

Recess Safety

Recess

We held sessions with grade level students and staff on how to use playground equipment safely and which areas would be best for specific sport & games. There are no specific rules, per se, just a better awareness of safety and proper playground equipment usage.

WordMasters Challenge

A team representing Spring Hill Elementary School achieved Highest Honors in the recent WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. The third grade team scored an impressive 178 points out of a possible 200 in the second of three meets this year, placing seventh in the nation.

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, students from Spring Hill Elementary School who achieved outstanding results in the meet include third graders Jacob Gocke, Brian Han and Anya Tong, and fourth graders Edward Guo, Inger Logan and Shveta Sunkar. The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by Merideth Fisher and Jean Lee.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

The WordMasters Challenge™ program is administered by a company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. Further information is available at the company’s website: http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com.
