Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence

From the Principal

Family,

We have a few things this week to celebrate, and I am so proud that the cause for celebrations involve so many of our students. But I also want to ensure that as we celebrate our student accomplishments, that we shed light on the work that the adults working with our students put in to inspire these talented youth to take risks and be judged or evaluated. Most of us know that it isn’t easy for us to be in the position of standing out and apart from the group. So, I really want to ensure that we recognize those students that have done what many of us “old people” won’t even do in an attempt to showcase our respective passions.

First, you will see below that our DECA team traveled to Virginia Beach to compete and returned with a number of wins. I would like to thank our dedicated Marketing teachers, Ms. Kellen Scott, Ms. Sara Hinkhouse, and Mrs. Vera Woodson for their work in preparing our students to compete, and win! In my conversations with students, I found that most of the students talked about how great the experience was, and how real it was. Real world experiences are what prepares them for what’s next outside of these doors. But they were all very appreciative of the efforts of their teachers to prepare them for the experience. If you run into a Marketing teacher, give ‘em a hug!

Second, you will see below that so many of our art students participated and were acknowledged at the 2019 Scholastic Art Awards. Again, students expressing themselves through their passions and putting them on display for the world to see and judge. And an equally passionate Art teaching staff of Justyne Fischer, Bob Christie, and Alison Saffron for the encouragement and sharing of their expertise with all of our students. Hug an Art teacher too!

Third, I want thank Mrs. Beckmann for her work with our students as they prepare for what will be an amazing talent show. I want to thank Mrs. Molly Rumberger for her time and efforts as she and her students boarded a bus Friday morning to travel to New York. I know that with her organization and desire to provide her students with the very best experiences, this will be a great trip!

Finally, for this week, I want to thank our teaching staff Mrs. Jenelle Fernandez and Mrs. Vera Woodson for their work with our students that are putting on International Night on March 22nd. The students are here after school every day practicing and pouring their hearts into their performances and sharing the very best from so many cultures for us to consume. And our dedicated teachers are here working with them as well. As our staff is engaged in Cultural Proficiency, the timing could not be better. So, two more outstanding teachers for you to hug.

On another note, as we wind the year down, we will need to begin sending out debt notices for outstanding items such as equipment, textbooks, etc. I don’t want to have these items pop up on you at the last moment, so our finance technician will be pushing those out soon.

Lastly, this year I am required to be evaluated by my school community. The survey will come out from Central Office sometime over the next month. So please be on the lookout for that. This information is very valuable for me and my growth, as well as the direction for the school. I hope that you will take the time to participate in the survey and provide your honest feedback.

Well that is all I have for this week. I say once again, I am honored to be here and thank you for your continued support! Have a great weekend. # OneStallion

South County DECA

Congratulations on the outstanding performance of South County DECA and their teachers, Vera Woodson, Kellen Scott and Sarah Hinkhouse at the 2019 Virginia DECA State Leadership Conference with nearly 4,000 competitors this past weekend!  The South County DECA Chapter went into Virginia Beach with 74 competitors and we were awarded many times throughout the weekend!  We are thrilled to say that Kellen Scott received an Outstanding Advisor award and recognition as the Chairperson for the Virginia DECA Board of Trustees.  The South County chapter also received recognition for being the largest chapter in the region, increasing student membership, and for our community service and advocacy efforts which earned us up to six leadership spots at International Conference.  Finally, they were also recognized for being a Gold Certified School Based Enterprise in their first year of operation collaborating with the WAT program.  Ask your student if they have seen the new kiosk for the school store during lunches on Monday, Wednesday & Thursdays!

Here are some impressive numbers on our results from last weekend.

  • 39 Stallions medaled in either their Role Play(s), Test, or overall performance.  That is over 50% of our competitors who were recognized for their efforts!
  • 67 total medals were won by our chapter as many students received awards in multiple areas.  34 medals were awarded to our team on Saturday night and 33 were awarded on Sunday morning.
  • 33 Stallions qualified (twice as many as last year) for DECA's International Career Development Conference and competition in Orlando, Florida April 26-May 1, 2019.
