Ms. Schwoyer is originally from Reading, PA, but her family moved to South Carolina when she was in the 6th grade. She has been playing the violin since she was eight years old. It was in high school when Chelsea decided that she wanted to be a teacher. Her private violin teacher at the time (Mrs. Woods), told her to consider being an orchestra teacher! After that, Chelsea knew that was exactly what she wanted to be!
Chelsea never had orchestra in her schools growing up, so she always tells her students how lucky they are to have Strings in school! She played her violin in her elementary school band (because they didn’t have an orchestra). In High school, she formed a music group where she played her electric violin!
She attended the University of South Carolina, where she received an Undergraduate and Graduate degree in Music Education. She has played with the Florence Symphony Orchestra and locally, the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra. She has been teaching orchestra at Aldrin ES and Herndon ES for the past seven years and loves it! 😊 She is excited to see the orchestra program at Aldrin ES grow each year!
Fun facts about Ms. Schwoyer:
- Won 3rd place in a fiddle fest competition when she was 9
- Played in front of 3,000 people and was so nervous!
- Selected for the South Carolina All-State Youth Orchestra (several years)
- Was Concertmaster for the Florence Youth Orchestra
- Was Concertmaster in her college orchestra
- Loves working out and focusing on her fitness when not involved in musical events
She also plays for private engagements such as weddings, and teaches private lessons.
The Critical and Creative Thinking Strategy we will highlight this month is Visualization. Visualization opens up student thinking by using sensory information to stimulate imagination with both spoken and written words. The process of visualization can also help students plan out an experience before execution. Students can “see” roadblocks and problems before encountering them. This strategy helps with planning, goal-setting, and organization. Research studies have shown that visualization greatly increases the level and depth of comprehension of both spoken and written words. Visualization can be a powerful strategy for helping your child set goals, picture the steps that need to be taken, consider alternatives, and visualize a plan to achieve their goals.
Ideas for using visualization at home:
- When reading a chapter book to your child, stop periodically and ask him to describe the room or place where the action is happening, or draw a picture of the character’s house.
- When planning a visit to a relative’s house, ask your child what she imagines will happen once you get there, as in who will be there, what the house looks like, etc.
- If your child is creating something at home and encounters a roadblock, ask her to visualize the solution before diving back in.
- If he has permission to rearrange his bedroom, ask him to visualize where everything will go. He may even draw out a map before moving furniture!
- If your child is working to become a better athlete, musician, artist, etc. Help her set goals by visualizing what it will look like when she gets to where she wants to be. Drawing a picture of herself having reached the goal and posting it where she can see it will also help her achieve this goal.
- When practicing for a math test, ask your child to visualize the anchor charts in the classroom for how to solve the problem.

AES Kindergarten Registration--April 5, 2019 @ 1:00 pm
Aldrin Elementary will be holding our kindergarten registration/orientation session on Friday, April 5th, beginning at 1 pm. Please contact the office at 703-904-3800 if you have a rising kindergarten student and need an enrollment package to be sent to you. Please also let your friends/neighbors/family know if they have a rising kindergarten student who will be attending Aldrin ES in the 2019-20 school year.
Unlike this example of the Lost & Found pictured above, Aldrin has some extremely nice coats and warm-wear clothing in it's Lost & Found, including some very well-known designer brands. Please come in next week if your child has lost anything. All items remaining on March 15th will be donated to local charities. See Mrs. Dowsett in the Main Office.
We'd also like to thank the SCA Officers and their sponsors for keeping the items neat and orderly so that students can easily look for their items.
Anything collected after March 15th, will be held and taken to a local charity over Spring Break.
Next week's News You Choose will feature Aldrin's Art teachers.
