Willow Springs Elementary School Weekly Update

March 1, 2019

Dear Willow Springs,

Praises are overdue for one of our teachers, Ms. Gunjan, who was recognized with an FCPS Cares award this week. FCPS Cares is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We are fortunate to have Ms. Gunjan here at Willow Springs and are so proud of her for being recognized with this honor. It is well-deserved!

We had a hat full of fun as we celebrated Read Across America Week. We had numerous opportunities to promote reading by dressing up as as our favorite book characters, wearing wacky socks, bringing stuffed animals to school, and so much more. We had some very creative and enthusiastic students take part, and this type of activity always goes a long way in promoting reading and creating friendships between students that they will remember for the rest of their lives.

We look forward to you all joining us at our annual Bingo Night next Friday! It is always such a fun community event.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Miss G with her students in library

Ms. "G" has been with us for two years. She began working at Willow Springs as a long-term substitute and is now an Instructional Assistant with our special education team. Recently, a student was experiencing a medical emergency in her classroom, and the lead teacher had left for the afternoon. Ms. G did a phenomenal job of clearing the classroom, keeping a time record of the seizure, explaining to the School Health Aide and EMS the events before the medical emergency, and remained calm the entire time. Her warm presence and dedication with her students is appreciated.

This information is posted to https://www.fcps.edu/blog/fcps-cares-february-2019. Thank you for your excellent service to FCPS and best wishes for continued success.

ATTN Parents:

Cafeteria Volunteers Needed

Please consider volunteering to help out in the cafeteria on Tuesday, March 5 & Tuesday, March 12. We are short a cafeteria hostess on these days so the extra hands would be helpful. No training required, the hostess will give you a bucket with condiments, etc. to pass out as kids raise their hands for help. Use this link to sign-up.

Hope to see you in the cafeteria! The kids love seeing new faces!

Kindergarten Registration Now Open for 2019-20 School Year!

If you have a child who will reach the age of five on or before September 30, 2019, they are eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year. If your child meets the age requirement and lives within the boundaries of Willow Springs Elementary School they may be registered at this time. Please sign up for a registration appointment and reserve a space for the orientation session soon. Forms and documents required for registration can be found through this link (scroll down to Student Registration) to the Willow Springs website. Student registrations have a direct impact on teacher staffing so the sooner registrations take place the better able we are to staff accordingly. Please call 703-679-6071 or email Liz Flaherty with any questions.

School Attendance Matters

The occasional tardy is nearly inevitable. Things happen to all of us. If you are finding that your child is late one or more times per week, you may need to change your routine to ensure a successful start to your family's day. It may seem like 10 minutes isn’t really that much, but for the typical school day of 7 hours, a student who is only 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of school time in one year. With 312 tardy students this week, we know we can do better!

All students are considered tardy at Willow Springs if they are not in their classroom when the second bell rings at 9:15 a.m.

Please use PickUp Patrol for all of your child's attendance, late arrivals, or change in afternoon dismissal requests.
