February Tiger Connection

Dear Families,

Each year we celebrate National Read Across America Day on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The day is meant to celebrate reading and raise awareness of its importance with children and their families. We look forward to observing this special day on Friday, March 1st at school and encourage you all to do the same at home. The best way to celebrate is simply to pick out a book with your child and read together! Nothing can have a greater impact on your child’s success at school than encouraging them to read at home, especially reading with them. As you read, ask your child questions about the book and discuss what they have read.

Here are a few examples of questions you might ask:

  • Can you predict what will happen next in the story?
  • Can you connect to any of the characters and how they feel?
  • What did you learn reading this book?
  • What part of the book did you find most interesting?
  • Why did you like this book or not?

Another great way to celebrate National Read Across America Day is to pick out some books together with your child at the local public library, and get a library card if you don’t have one already. It is free to get one! The closest public library to Mason Crest is George Mason Library (7001 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA). The library has lots of great programs to incentivize children to read books, so be sure to ask about them when you go.

We hope you enjoy reading with your child!
