STUDENT ART WORK IS INSTALLED AT FAIRFAX!
Dear Family Fairfax,
Today marks the final day of National Custodial Appreciation Week—and it was quite a week to thank a custodian. What many in our community are not aware of is that, often times on snow days, our custodians come in to do a clean-up of the grounds. If the weather conditions won’t allow for them to travel safely, and we open the next day after an event, it is often a smaller crew trying to do the bulk of the clean up in a limited amount of time. And, that snow/slushy mess that “was” yesterday, proved to be a back breaker. If you are on campus and happen to see a custodian in our beautiful and well-kept facility, please take the time to thank them. They are critical to all we do at Fairfax, and though weekly appreciations are important, they should be celebrated daily.
As a reminder, a great way to recognize any of our staff members is through our FCPS Cares recognition program! If/when a staff member goes above and beyond, consider a public recognition: https://www.fcps.edu/careers/employee-recognition-programs/fcps-cares-program .Submissions also come to me, and I can share them with the entire staff and Fairfax family!
As I type, many of our students are participating in the 8th period presentation of tonight’s International Festival, and many of our track and field state competitors are currently proudly representing Fairfax. Add the beautiful student artwork that just went up today on a few of our windows, our Mighty Rebel basketball team playing Lake Braddock tonight, our Science Olympiad regional tournament, and the pre-assessment workshops and concerts for our fantastic music programs, and the next week is sure to be one filled with Fairfax’s Pride. And, I use pride in both ways—as family and as celebration.
I look forward to seeing parents at our coffee on Friday morning. Last month’s coffee, set to be in our Career Center, was cancelled due to weather, so we will be meeting there this month.
All the best,

Six Fairfax High School students - that’s right, six made All State Choir! Please congratulate these students on this notable achievement: Brigid Smullen, Noelle Buice, Allison Yi, Ashley Flamiano, Charles Wolfer and Edward Park. Additionally, we have two alternates: Marin Bronaugh and Brendan Smith.
Congratulations to Fairfax’s Lara Demir on being named a recipient of a 2019 Student Peace Award, recognizing young people who work as peacemakers. Lara is a founder of a local chapter of Fairfax Minds Matter, a mental health organization that seeks to reduce the stigma of mental illness, increase help-seeking and coping skills, and promote positivity and social connectedness for teens. She has volunteered in a community center in Turkey to support displaced Syrian families. Recipients from 22 FCPS schools will be recognized at a reception on March 10 at the Sherwood Community Center.
The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians and school staff members who interact with the school health rooms. This may include principals, school counselors, and main office staff members. The survey has been approved for distribution by the FCPS’ Internal Survey Advisory Committee.
Electronic versions of the survey forms may be accessed at:
School Health Services Survey – Parents 2019: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/85QGH7C
School Health Services Survey-Parents 2019 (Spanish): https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LLSF55F
The survey will take less than five minutes to complete and will provide the FCHD with valuable information. Your participation in this important endeavor is appreciated.
