Stallion P.R.I.D.E.
Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence
From the Principal
Family,
I wonder how it will go over to tell you that I am officially tired of the snow! Our teachers are committed to ensure that our students receive all the instruction we can provide, but this fluffy, cold, eventually messy stuff seems to be getting in the way. Please ensure that your students are keeping up with assignments, monitoring their Google classrooms or Blackboard sites. I know that teachers are feeling the pinch due to the number of days that we have been out, as well as the number of class periods that have been impacted by delayed openings. Teachers will be patient, but are going to want to keep pace whenever possible. I imagine that this can be just as stressful to students, so please have them communicate with their teachers early, and often if they find themselves becoming overwhelmed.
I wanted to give a huge shout out to the participants in the South County Middle and High School orchestras. The program that they put on Thursday was outstanding. The effort that it takes to make the sounds they made is huge. That requires commitment, and we are so proud of their work. Mr. Caven, one of our assistant principals, reached deep onto his old school vocabulary chest when he described the performance stating, “My Word!” Enough said I would say! For those who were able to come out and enjoy an evening of great free music, thank you for coming out and supporting these outstanding students.
I had the opportunity to speak with the entire 9th grade class on Friday following their Curriculum Overview session with our school counselors. I enjoyed my time speaking with them about ensuring that they are remaining focused during the second half of the year, taking care of one another, and using the outstanding human resources we have available to them should they need us to assist with working through any issues that may arise. During the curriculum overview, they learned about the course selection process and received a bright green sheet of potential courses available to them for their 10th grade year. Please be sure to ask them about this document and have deep conversations about what electives they will be a part of next year. Please know that it is just as important that they understand what they don’t want to do, as it is that they know what they do want to do.
This week was Custodian Appreciation Week! We are so lucky to have working alongside us, one of the best custodial teams in the county. This group of hard working men and women make our home away from home a warm and comfortable place to spend the day. Not to mention that they extend themselves to work within the vision of #OneStallion by positively interacting with students and creating opportunities to build relationships with them. The next time you are in the building and you run into one of these outstanding service people, please take a moment to let them know that you appreciate the work they do to make South County look amazing every day!
If you were not fortunate enough to be here on last Friday evening to see the production put on in the Black History Program, you missed out on a treat! The program was dedicated to African Americans and their impact in military service. Not only did the students do a great job of presenting information, the musical selections, and dance acts were phenomenal. The String Orchestra performed the tribute to the military branches, and the Jazz Band played a blues number that was off the charts as well. It was an exciting event and I was honored to have been able to witness the talents of so many of our students that we don’t hear from regularly. Thank you to all of you that were here to support our students. And a huge thank you to Ms. Tanya Smith, South County P.E. instructor for organizing such a wonderful event!
Last thing, if your student comes home and tells you that his/her teacher gave them a big hug from out of nowhere, it might be because of one of these. Have a great weekend Family! #OneStallion

Max Grant is the son of immigrants and graduated (barely) from public high school in New Jersey in 1981. Six months later, after working in an auto body shop and doing construction, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He graduated from Marine boot camp in Parris Island in 1982. Eighteen months later, he was selected to attend the Naval Academy Prep School, where he played football and lacrosse. He then attended the US Naval Academy, playing football and breaking a few face off records on Navy’s lacrosse team. After graduation, Max obtained a Master’s Degree from Georgetown University, then completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training and served as a team leader with SEAL Team FOUR from 1989-93. As a SEAL, he did several counter-narcotics deployments to Latin America, and completed the US Army Special Forces Qualification course in Ft. Bragg, making him the only known person qualified as a Marine, a SEAL and a Green Beret. After leaving military service he was an aide to Senator John McCain and served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations during Operation Enduring Freedom. He was one of the founders of the private security company Triple Canopy. He also graduated from the University of Chicago Law School and is a partner with the global law firm Latham & Watkins, where he tries complex patent cases. Max has been married to his wife Maggie (who he met at the Naval Academy) for 26 years.
