Survey of Preschool Students

Virginia law, Section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2019, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

Please note that if you have a rising kindergartener, you may access the preschool survey here to complete and return to the school. If you have neighbors whose children would attend Gunston Elementary, please let them know that the survey has been released so that they may provide their information to the survey as well. Registration is available by appointment only and will begin in February.

Kindergarten Orientation for the parents of 2019-2020 Kindergarten students is scheduled on Wednesday, March 20, from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

Read Across America Day

Friday, March 1st

Read Across America Day is Friday, March 1st, and to get students excited about reading, we have several activities planned at Gunston Elementary!

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program, sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA), that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading. This year's theme is "Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers." Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated to read and who spend more time reading do better in school.

This year at Gunston, we will have spirit activities during the week of February 25th .  Additional papers for the reading contest and Spring Fundraiser sponsored by the PTA will also be sent out soon. Thank you for partnering with us to instill a love of reading in our Gunston Eagles!

FCPS Family Engagement Survey

Fairfax County Public Schools will be conducting a survey to gather information about family engagement in our schools. Relationships are important to us, and your opinion is critical to help us support your engagement in your child’s education. Your feedback will also help us determine how well we are reaching the goals for Caring Culture we have set in our Strategic Plan. Survey translations will be made available, and the survey can be taken on electronic devices, including smartphones.

Survey administration is scheduled for March 24-April 12, 2019, and you will receive more information about how to take the survey in the near future.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Registration for School Year 2019-2020

We are accepting registrations for students residing in our boundaries who will be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2019, as well as students in grades 1 - 6 transferring from Private/Home Schools or moving into our boundary prior to the start of the new school year.  Please notify the school as soon as possible if your child will be attending Gunston ES in the fall.

Please spread the word to neighbors to whom this may pertain. While you are guaranteed enrollment (as long as you physically reside in our boundaries and meet the age requirements) we prefer you register sooner rather than later to ensure we are adequately staffed.

School Health Services Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS. To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD. Electronic versions of the survey forms for parents may be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/85QGH7C (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LLSF55F en español). The survey will take less than five minutes to complete and will provide the FCHD with valuable information. Your participation in this important endeavor is appreciated.

Tdap Notice for Parents of 5th Graders

Virginia Law requires that all students entering sixth grade receive a booster dose of the Tdap vaccine prior to the beginning of school. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) and is usually given around the age of 11, although it can be given as early as seven years of age.

In order for your child to begin 6th grade you will need to submit a copy of your child’s immunization record showing the Tdap vaccine before the first day of school.  It is recommended that all paperwork is submitted to the school office by June 13, 2019.  A Tdap Notice was sent home recently with all 5th Grade students.
