Principals’ Message
Happy Snow Day, Lane families! Our winter weather roller coaster continues to roll on, and we hope this latest storm finds you warm and cozy and safe at home. As you've probably heard by now, schools will open two hours late tomorrow - Thursday, February 21st. Lane will open at 11:20 a.m.
We’d like to thank all of the families who have donated so far to our SCA’s “Pennies for Patients” campaign to raise funds to fight leukemia, lymphoma, and other childhood cancers. The first week alone we raised more than $2,000! It truly is amazing what spare change and generous hearts can do. As always, we are grateful to be a part of such a caring community.
Tomorrow we will have our annual Spelling Bee, featuring the classroom spelling champions from first through sixth grade. It will begin at 2 p.m. in the Cafeteria. Champions’ families should have received more information from their child’s teacher.
Finally, while it’s true this school year is only just beyond half over, we are starting to plan for next fall, specifically for our littlest lions – our new kindergarteners! We will hold our annual Kindergarten Orientation Night for the parents of these new students on Tuesday, March 19th, at 6:30 p.m. If you have a child who will be coming to kindergarten at Lane this fall and you’d like to learn more about the program and the registration process, please plan to join us. If you don’t have a rising kindergartener yourself, please share this information with neighbors or friends who do.
Have a great week, and stay warm!

News & Notes
“Early Bird” Yearbook Price Extended through March 1st!
Due to the many weather-related school closings and delays over the past few weeks, we have extended the window to purchase yearbooks at a reduced price for two more weeks. The basic book will continue to be just $16 until Friday, March 1st. The cost will go up to $20 after that date.
PLEASE NOTE: All sales are online only. Go to http://ybpay.lifetouch.com, put in yearbook ID code 10217419, and pay with your credit card. If you are not able to order online but would still like to order a book, please contact parent liaison and yearbook coordinator Melanie Crosby Hardy at macrosby@fcps.edu or 703-924-7717.
Ordering early is the only way to guarantee your child will get a book. If you wait until the end of the year to purchase a copy, you may not be able to get one. We have sold out the past few years.
Winter Quest Continues through March 6th
Lane’s popular incentive-based fitness program – Winter Quest – continues through the first week of March. Students can earn one point per day by participating in at least 20 minutes of activity before or after school during the week and/or on weekends. Participation in the Quest is optional and will be used as extra credit for your child’s physical-education grade. All points should be logged on official Quest score cards, which must be turned in to the P.E. teachers at the end of the program.
“Pennies for Patients” Donation Drive Continues through March 1st
We are already nearly halfway to our $5,500 schoolwide goal! Please help your child continue to collect change and donations, then help them count it before sending it to school. Any donation, no matter how small, will help us. Thank you for supporting this important fundraiser!
Lane Lions Unified Special Olympics Basketball Team Plays This Weekend!
Our unified boys in blue will take the basketball court again this coming Sunday, February 24th, to play two games at Episcopal High School in Alexandria (3900 West Braddock Road, Alexandria). The first game will be held at 10 a.m., the second at 1:30 p.m. (These are two separate games; the team will not play through those times.) All Lane families are invited to come cheer on our team! Bring your Lane spirit and portable seating. We hope to see you there! Go Lions!
SAVE THE DATE! Twain Community Night Is Thursday, March 14th!
All families are invited to come to this special open house to get to know the school, have some family-friendly fun, and maybe even win some prizes! Watch for more information coming soon!
NEW DATE for International Night – Thursday, March 28th!
Let’s hope the third time’s the charm for this year’s International Night! We’ve tried twice to hold it, and twice Mother Nature has had other ideas, blowing away our plans with snow and ice. We are determined to try again to hold this popular family event. The new date is Thursday, March 28th. Watch Wednesday Folders for updated participation forms coming soon!

Discipline Practices Survey
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is studying how school environments relate to discipline practices in the Division. As part of the study, you will receive a survey from FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement (ORSI). The surveys are designed to help FCPS understand your and your child’s thoughts about the school environment and how discipline is approached in their school. Surveys to parents will come via eNotify. Participation is voluntary for you and your child, and all responses will be anonymous. This important survey will help FCPS understand what is working well and where we can improve.
School Health Services Survey Is Now Available
The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS. To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD. Electronic versions of the survey forms for parents may be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/85QGH7C (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LLSF55F en español). The survey will take less than five minutes to complete and will provide the FCHD with valuable information. Your participation in this important endeavor is appreciated.
