Willow Springs Elementary School Weekly Update

February 22, 2019

Dear Willow Springs,

We congratulate the Centreville High School basketball team on their pursuit of the state championship. We wish them well as they compete at the regional tournament this evening. The new date for our Spirit Night is now Thursday, April 4, 2019.

Willow Springs is wrapping up February with our Who Am I Black History Month Celebration! In addition to our Mystery Musician segments on the morning news, guest speakers, and many other learning activities, our staff encouraged students to decorate their classroom doors in celebration of an African American inventor, leader, or figure. We wanted our students to see the powerful and dynamic accomplishments that African American men and women have made over the last century, and now when you walk down our hallways, energetic colors and familiar faces grab your eye and inspire all who pass by. We hope you have an opportunity to stop by and walk through history with us! This is a tradition we hope to continue year after year.

In the week ahead, I would imagine we'll hear a lot of rhyming in our classrooms as Dr. Seuss books will be at the forefront. We hope you will inspire your child's love for reading by encouraging them to participate in our Read Across America Spirit Week!  And as Dr. Seuss himself once said: “You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.”

Have a wonderful weekend.

The Centreville High School gymnasium is no longer available for us to use for our Spirit Night this evening as they pursue a state title. The new date for our Spirit Night is now Thursday, April 4, 2019 at Centreville High. Doors will still open at 6:00 p.m. and the faculty basketball game will begin at 6:30 p.m. We apologize for the inconvenience, but congratulate the Centreville High School basketball team. We wish them well as they compete at the regional tournament this evening.

Read Across America Week

February 25th - March 1st

Read Across America Spirit week is Monday, February 25th – Friday, March 1st, 2019. There will be a theme for every day that corresponds to the book of the day; daily prizes for everyone, and guest readers in some of the younger classrooms. Help us celebrate a school full of diverse readers! Our line-up for the week is as follows:

Monday, February 25th: Fox in Socks/Crazy Sock Day (Wear the craziest socks you can find.)

Tuesday, February 26th: The Cat in the Hat/Crazy Hat Day (Additionally, students can record a flip grid video about their favorite Dr. Seuss line or book, with parental permission, of course!)

Wednesday, February 27th: Wacky Wednesday/Crazy Dress Day (Wear mismatched items, clothes inside out, etc.)

Thursday, February 28th: Which Pet Should I Get/Stuffed Animal Day (Additionally, students can share their favorite book or author during morning meeting or whenever works best for their teacher.)

Friday, March 1st: Book Character Day (Students should dress like their favorite book character to celebrate all authors and books!)

A huge thank you to our administration, our librarian, Ms. Hurley, and our SCA for their support!!
