Dear Seahawk Families:
FCPS Survey
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is studying how school environments relate to discipline practices in the Division. As part of the study, you will receive a survey from FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement. A small number of classrooms will also participate in the study’s student survey. The surveys are designed to help FCPS understand your and your child’s thoughts about the school environment and how discipline is approached in their school.
Surveys to parents will be translated into multiple languages and come via eNotify. Student surveys will be administered at school. Participation is voluntary for you and your child, and all responses will be anonymous.
I encourage you to participate in this important survey to help FCPS understand what is working well and where we can improve.
IB & SOL Testing
SOL Writing test for students taking English 11 will take place in the March 4th – 15th timeframe. Earning a passing score on this test is a graduation requirement.
SOL tests in other subject areas will be given in May. More information about the schedule will be shared closer to the testing window.
IB Testing begins in May. The full schedule can be found at https://southlakeshs.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/inline-files/2019%20IB%20Exam%20Schedule.pdf
Academic Advising
School counselors are busy meeting with students now to choose courses for next school year. They have met with most of the rising juniors and seniors and will begin meeting with rising sophomores Tuesday, February 19th. This is a very important process in helping us as a school determine what courses will be held next year and therefore our staffing needs for teachers. Our staffing decisions are made from course selections, so we are asking that any changes to course requests be completed by March 8th. Any requests after March 8th will be considered on a space-available basis.
SLHS offers mini-conferences for parents and their (rising 10-12) student to review course selections (see separate message with more information). Parents can also see course requests in ParentVue. For rising 9th grade students, the course selection process is done at the student’s middle school. Any questions for rising 9th grade students should be directed to the middle school counselors.
FCPS Parent Resource Center (PRC)
The PRC will be offering evening hours on Tuesday, Feb. 19th from 4-6:00pm.
Stop by to visit us and check out some great materials and resources. The Parent Resource Center lending library contains over 6,000 books, DVDs, and CDs on topics related to parenting and educating all children, including those with learning challenges, special needs and disabilities. Our library is a free lending library for parents, staff and community members to use.

Attendance Matters
The state has implemented a new school accreditation measure around attendance. Students who miss more than 10% of the school year (18 days in the year) for ANY reason, excused or unexcused, are considered chronically absent. If we reach a certain threshold of students who are chronically absent, SLHS will not meet that accreditation standard. Please be mindful of the school schedule when you plan trips or other events that will result in your child missing school.
Please visit the FCPS website https://www.fcps.edu/node/34134 ] for more information about the importance of school attendance. For your planning purposes, below are links to the school calendars for both this year and next year.
