To Karen Allison for being recognized as an employee who shows that FCPS Cares!
- Greetings, my name is Ryan Cotnoir. I am a very proud 2002 graduate of Falls Church High School’s (FCHS) beneficial and motivating special education program. Mrs. Karen Allison was my teacher for subjects including English, Math and Basic Skills for four of my eight years in that program. She is about to retire after 23 years at FCHS. I know for a fact that Karen Allison truly deserves an FCPS Cares Award. Here are the reasons why I nominate Mrs. Allison. She deserves the FCPS Cares Award. Karen Allison was more than just my teacher in my eight years at FCHS. She went above and beyond the call of duty and helped me in times of fear and uncertainty and she was always there for me when I needed her. Her gentle voice and her super caring persona helped me through my very intense fear of loud noises like the fire alarm and she was also right there during pep rallies to warn me before the stop-clock buzzer. She even helped me understand the deaths in my family twice. I know that across her years at FCHS, Mrs. Allison had a great influence on many, many special needs students. From warning me about fire drills to mending life’s little and big wounds, Karen Allison was always very patient and calm and that’s why I know without any doubt in my mind, that Karen Allison has already “won” this award, but now it should be official.

Fire Alarm Testing
The fire alarm system at our school will be inspected and tested during the week of February 18.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Fairfax County Office of the Fire Marshal require Fairfax County Public Schools to test our fire alarm system annually. This test is very extensive, as we must inspect and test each and every fire alarm device. This testing can only be performed when the building is unoccupied; therefore, the typical hours of testing are from approximately 10:00 P.M. until 5:00 A.M., Monday through Friday. System testing can range from 1 day to 5 days, depending on building size.
In an effort to minimize disruption, the testing of the audible portion (horns) of the system is performed at the end of the total system test (the last testing day). The approximate amount of time that the audible portion (horns) are activated is one hour.

School Environment Survey
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is studying how school environments relate to discipline practices in the Division. As part of the study, you will receive a survey from FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement. A small number of classrooms will also participate in the study’s student survey. The surveys are designed to help FCPS understand your and your child’s thoughts about the school environment and how discipline is approached in their school.
Surveys to parents will be translated into multiple languages and come via eNotify. Student surveys will be administered at school. Participation is voluntary for you and your child, and all responses will be anonymous.
I encourage you to participate in this important survey to help FCPS understand what is working well and where we can improve.
Thank you,
Ben Nowak, Principal
FCPSOn Survey
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are conducting an evaluation of the FCPSOn initiative in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). This initiative “moves FCPS students and staff members to look beyond the high-stakes testing environment and to help our students develop skills so they can be successful in the workforce of the future.”
Learn more about the FCPSOn initiative here:
As a student in a school implementing the FCPSOn initiative, we are requesting permission for your child to participate in this evaluation. Their participation will involve them being invited to complete a short survey online and they may be selected to participate in a brief focus group to share their opinions concerning the FCPSOn initiative.
If you do NOT want your child to participate in the survey, please follow this link:
Complete the form and have your student return it to the main office. If you have any questions, please contact Peter M. Lake, assistant principal, 703-207-4051.
