Round 2!
Junior Spelling Bee! (3-6*)
On behalf of Becky Eckerman and Michelle Kim
Hi, everyone,
We would like to thank all of our spellers, parents, and volunteers for an awesome night of spelling! Our top three spellers* from last week hung on to the end again, along with some impressive upperclassmen. Here were the final results:
Winner: #26 Jia Patil - 6th grade (championship word: permissive)
1st Runner-up: #2 Margot Jairam - 2nd grade
2nd Runner-up: #1 Truman Kemeny - 2nd grade
Jia will be invited to move on to the Fairfax County Bee, which takes place Sunday, March 17th.
We are so proud of all of the spellers who came last night; everyone did an amazing job! Thanks again to the parents who helped everything run smoothly, including Nicole Gummer--and a special thank you to our Pronouncer, Jane Miscavage, and our three judges, Matt Shinkman, Eliza Morss and Joni Pepin. These four people had the hardest jobs, and we are so grateful for their dedication to this event.
Becky and Michelle
It was truly amazing to witness these students continue to spell incredibly difficult words!
Let's Help Everyone Stay Healthy!
Recently, we have seen a significant increase in flu-like symptoms, including gastrointestinal illness, high fever, and Strep. We ask that you ensure the safety and health of your child, as well as others, by not sending your children to school if they have symptoms. This includes not sending your child to school on a fever reducer, and making sure that your child is fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. If we all do our part, we may be able to mitigate some of the illness that is preventing our students from feeling their best and attending school.
The CDC has a guide that can help you understand how the Flu impacts your child and what you can do to help your child remain healthy. Thank you, in advance, for your adherence to school and county policy regarding illness.

The Spelling Bee is the perfect reason to highlight the new phonics programming we have begun to implement at Flint Hill this year! Why? Because "learning about words and how they work impacts all aspects of literacy." Read this blog post, connected to the Literacy Collaborative and Fountas and Pinnell Classroom (F & P). These are resources that we purchased this year to support meaningful literacy experiences across all grade levels.
In addition to F & P Classroom, our kindergarteners and first graders have been enjoying the Lucy Calkins et. al. Units of Study in Phonics this year and are learning so much! Grade 2 will follow next year, ensuring that all our primary students have a strong foundation in phonics...which transfers to becoming better readers and writers!
The new Units of Study in Phonics, Grades K–2:
- provide a lean and concise instructional pathway in phonics that is realistic and doable, and that taps into kids’ skills and energy for tackling the fabulous challenge of learning to read and write,
- introduce high-leverage phonics concepts and strategies in a way that keeps pace with students' reading and writing and helps them understand when, how, and why they can use phonics to read and write,
- offer delightfully fun and engaging storylines, classroom mascots, songs, chants, rhymes, and games to help students fall head over heels in love with phonics and to create a joyous community of learners,
- align with state-of-the-art reading and writing workshops for a coherent approach in which terminology, tools, rituals, and methods are shared in ways that benefit both teachers and kids.
 From earlier this year...
Mrs. Thurston's kindergarteners are deeply engaged in their alphabet charts.

Student Transfer Renewal Applications Open February 15th
A student transfer is valid for one year only. A parent or guardian must submit a renewal application each year for student transfer consideration. A renewal application may be submitted for students who continue to meet the same student transfer criteria as indicated on the original student transfer request. For students no longer meeting the same student transfer criteria, a new transfer request must be submitted.
All students will be considered eligible for student transfer renewal unless the principal indicates ineligibility in the Online Student Transfer Application Admin View. Principals will access the renewal select tab and indicate any student not eligible for student transfer renewal and select a reason for denial.
Letters will be automatically generated from the online student transfer application in February for students eligible and not eligible for renewal and sent to the enrolling parent's primary email address found in the Student Information System (SIS).
For detailed information regarding the new renewal process, please visit: http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/ssse/student-transfer/StudentTransferRenewal.pdf
What an absolutely inspiring week! From our very first "Empty Bowls, Full Hearts" event, to the fifth grade "Ancient China and Ancient India Museum," it was a memorable week, filled with service learning, authentic audiences, and family engagement. Not only that, but we are 100 days smarter! These important ingredients, most especially family engagement, are a recipe for success in learning and in life. Thank you to our entire community for your support of these efforts. We cannot think of a time that we have ever had so many parents in our building at once, and it is a blessing that we hope is repeated as our year continues!
Tweet, tweet, Flint Hill family!
Our fourth graders have a lot to look forward to next year in fifth!
Mrs. Kohls reminds us that in addition to our kindergarteners, all our students are 100 days smarter!
