Registration for School Year 2019-2020

We are accepting registrations for students residing in our boundaries who will be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2019, as well as students in grades 1 - 6 transferring from Private/Home Schools or moving into our boundary prior to the start of the new school year.  Please notify the school as soon as possible if your child will be attending Halley ES in the fall.

Please spread the word to neighbors to whom this may pertain. While you are guaranteed enrollment (as long as you physically reside in our boundaries and meet the age requirements) we prefer you register sooner rather than later to ensure we are adequately staffed.

February is Black History Month

Black History

Let's Celebrate Together!

  • Introduce your child to books from African-American Authors like Nikki Grimes or Jabari Asim.
  • Invite your child to learn about African American Inventors such as Garret T. Morgan who invented the traffic light and Lonnie Johnson, an African American NASA Engineer, who invented the iconic squirt toy that we know of as the Super Soaker.
  • Ask your child if they have any new ideas that they can invent and have them write them down and draw a picture of their invention. Inventors Day is February 19th.

If you're interested in learning some terrific history and get Netflix, "Kevin Hart's Guide to Black History" is fabulous. Under the premise of narrating stories to his daughter, he describes famous and not-so-famous folks throughout American history, including Henry 'Box' Brown, Mae Jemison, Robert Smalls, Josephine Baker, Matthew Henson, Robert Johnson, and a whole slew of others. It's really kid friendly and full of information, all explained through little vignettes, some of which are laugh-out-loud funny.

Health Department Immunization requirements for students entering sixth grade in 2019-2020

If you have a 5th grade student, it’s time to take a careful look at his or her immunization records. It is a requirement that all students in Virginia receive a booster dose of Tdap vaccine prior to entering 6th grade. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) and is usually given around the age of 11, although it can be given as early as seven years of age.

If your child is 11 years old, he or she should get the Tdap immunization, and documentation should be provided to the school.

  • If your child is still 10 years old, he or she may receive the Tdap vaccine, Boostrix, which is approved for 10 year olds, or you may wait until the 11th birthday to receive the vaccine approved for 11 year olds.
  • If your child’s 11th birthday is after the first day of school, your child must have a written medical exemption from the doctor stating when he or she will receive the Tdap immunization in order to attend school. Please provide documentation to the school that your child has had the Tdap booster prior to August 26, 2019. Immunizations required for school are available at the Fairfax County Health Department at no charge. Clinic locations and walk-in hours can be found at Health Department

It’s important that families attend to this matter as soon as possible. Your sixth grader cannot begin school in the fall without documentation of having had the Tdap booster or a tetanus-containing vaccine within the past 5 years.
