Dear Seahawk Families:
Change to Standard Diploma Graduation Requirement
In order to provide students with additional opportunities to take course that align to future career goals and areas of interest, the Virginia Department of Education has approved a request to align the FCPS Standard Diploma requirements with those of the Virginia Board of Education.
Students pursuing a standard diploma are now required to earn three credits in social studies instead of four:
- 1 World History/Geography
- 1 Virginia and United States History
- 1 Virginia and United States Government
This recent change allows for us to adjust the sequence of courses for rising sophomores and beyond. Our students already complete a World History/Geography course in freshman year and Virginia and US History junior year. We will now offer Government, either honors or standard level, to all sophomores. This change will allow for greater elective flexibility in senior year. Please note that there are no course changes to the FCPS Advanced Diploma.
SLHS Academic Advising Mini-Conferences
Our school counselors will once again be offering mini-conferences around academic advising on February 28th & March 6th between 3:20 – 6:00pm. These 10-minute conferences are intended for both parents and students, who are rising 10th - 12th graders, to meet with the student’s counselor to talk through the course options the student is considering for the 2019-20 school year. Please use the links below to sign up for a mini-conference. If you need to cancel, please do so in a timely manner so someone else may use the slot.
