It's Volleyball Season in PE
Despite the cold temperatures and inclement weather our students are staying fit and having fun indoors during physical education classes. These past several weeks students have been jumping rope to maintain their cardio endurance. We then transitioned to our volleyball unit. Skill development for K-2 students begins with balloons then progresses to beach ball newcomb and volleyball. Students in grades 3-6 learn to volley, bump, underhand and overhead serve which all leads to some exciting volleyball games. Hopefully when the sixth grade students compete against the CWES staff in volleyball on May 23 they will be well prepared to make it a challenging game!
Family Engagement Survey
Fairfax County Public Schools will be conducting a survey to gather information about family engagement in our schools. Relationships are important to us, and your opinion is critical to help us support your engagement in your child’s education. Your feedback will also help us determine how well we are reaching the goals for Caring Culture we have set in our Strategic Plan. Survey translations will be made available, and the survey can be taken on electronic devices, including smartphones.
Survey administration is scheduled for March 24-April 12, 2019, and you will receive more information about how to take the survey in the near future.
We look forward to hearing from you.

SCA "Foster" Bears Huge Success
Necole Brown, School Counselor and SCA sponsor assisted students at Canterbury Woods Elementary with the “Foster” Bear project. Students worked together to help brighten the lives of children in foster care. Build-A-Bear generously donated 40 bears to the school for this project. Each class was given a bear to “foster” with love and kindness for two weeks. Students were asked to dress their bear for winter, provide some books to share with their new person, include a special item (such as letters, coloring, a small toy) that the bear can share with the recipient, and to pack the bear up to be transported to its new home. The bears were then transported to the Fairfax County Department of Social Services to be distributed to children currently living in foster care.

Life is full of transitions. For families of children with disabilities thinking about the future can bring mixed emotions. Some families are just trying to make it through day-to-day challenges and might not feel they have the energy to think about what happens after high school. Others may want to plan for that transition, but are confused by unfamiliar language, complex steps, and the many agencies that may be involved in adult services.
Join us for this FREE parent friendly 4-week online course that focuses on providing parent-friendly transition information to help make transition planning easier. This course is designed for parents/caregivers of elementary, middle or high school special education students to learn more about transition services intended to help youth with disabilities make the transition from high school to the world of adulthood. It is never too early to start learning about transition services and begin taking steps to prepare for the future. Topics covered in this course will include:
-What is Transition and Why is it Important?
-Transition Services in the IEP
-Guardianship, Power of Attorney, and Age of Majority
-Special Needs Trusts and ABLE accounts
-Letters of Intent
-Transitioning into Independent Living including employment, further education, housing, transportation, etc.
-Connecting to Adult Services
