Junior Spelling Bee! (K-2)

On behalf of Becky Eckerman and Michelle Kim

We would like to thank all our spellers, parents and volunteers for an awesome night of spelling! It came down to a battle between the Kemeny brothers and they were hard to stump, even when we got to 8th grade level words! To determine a winner, we had to skip ahead to our "challenge words," which are the words not on the study guide list. This does not usually happen in our Jr. bee, so that was very impressive! The results are below, all three are 2nd graders:

Winner: #40 Jefferson Kemeny (winning word: legacy)

1st Runner up: #30 Truman Kemeny

2nd Runner up: #38 Margot Jairam

We are so proud of all the spellers who came last night; everyone did an amazing job! Thanks again to the parents who helped everything run smoothly: Beth Blinstrub, Arvind Jairam, and Tina Shah--and a special thank you to our Pronouncer, Sarah Lundquist, as well as our three judges, Matt Shinkman, Molly Lundquist, and Gayle Schlueter. These 4 people have the hardest jobs and we are so grateful for their dedication!

Becky and Michelle

Don't forget to join us for the Spelling Bee, for grades 3-6, this Friday!

survey

Upcoming Survey

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is studying how school environments relate to discipline practices in the Division. As part of the study, you will receive a survey from FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement (ORSI). The surveys are designed to help FCPS understand your and your child’s thoughts about the school environment and how discipline is approached in their school.

Surveys to parents will be translated into multiple languages and come via eNotify.

Participation is voluntary for you and your child, and all responses will be anonymous.

I encourage you to participate in this important survey to help FCPS understand what is working well and where we can improve.

Warmly,

Jennifer Hertzberg

DedicatED

Recently, we discussed Place-Based Education (PBE). This week, we would like to highlight Passion Projects, especially as "Show What You Know" is a wonderful example of such innovative learning that illustrates an opportunity for your children to explore what they love to do, what they wonder about, or what they want to improve upon...it is an incredible opportunity to cultivate curiosity! To learn more about Passion Projects, see the infographic below, or click on this video. We hope that your child capitalizes on the recent extension that has been provided by our amazing PTA. New date: March 28th!

Student Transfer Renewal Applications Open February 15th

A student transfer is valid for one year only. A parent or guardian must submit a renewal application each year for student transfer consideration. A renewal application may be submitted for students who continue to meet the same student transfer criteria as indicated on the original student transfer request. For students no longer meeting the same student transfer criteria, a new transfer request must be submitted.

All students will be considered eligible for student transfer renewal unless the principal indicates ineligibility in the Online Student Transfer Application Admin View. Principals will access the renewal select tab and indicate any student not eligible for student transfer renewal and select a reason for denial.

Letters will be automatically generated from the online student transfer application in February for students eligible and not eligible for renewal and sent to the enrolling parent's primary email address found in the Student Information System (SIS).

For detailed information regarding the new renewal process, please visit:  http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/ssse/student-transfer/StudentTransferRenewal.pdf
