FCCLA Sponsors Shoe Drive for all of February

Do you have shoes laying around that you no longer need, but don’t have time to take elsewhere to donate?  Please consider supporting Soles for Souls and the FCCLA by donating your shoes in the main office during the month of February.  Donating your unused/unwanted shoes can create real change for those in poverty.

Laced shoes should be tied together by the laces, and non-laced shoes should be rubber banded together. If you don’t have rubber bands, we’ll do it for you!

For those interested, tax receipts are available upon request https://soles4souls.org/get-involved/give-money/request-a-tax-receipt/

Thank you for your support!

Eating Disorder Parent Letter and Fact Sheet

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2013),

Thirty million Americans will struggle with an eating disorder and millions more will battle food and body image issues at some point in their lives. Eating disorders are real, complex, and devastating conditions that can have serious consequences for health, productivity and relationships. They are not a fad, phase, or lifestyle choice. Eating disorders are serious, potentially life-threatening conditions that affect a person’s emotional and physical health.

Financial Aid Information for Middle School Parents

College Access Fairfax will again provide multiple sessions for parents to learn about financial aid information for students after high school. Information covered includes cost of attendance at different types of institutions, what financial aid is, how a family can apply for financial aid, a glossary of important terms and information on Virginia529 plans. While middle school students are unable to apply for financial aid at this time, we hope to make families familiar with the terms and procedures in order to ease this process when the student is in high school. The times and locations of the individual sessions can be found here. If you plan to attend one of the sessions, please RSVP by going to www.collegeaccessfairfax.org and then go to the calendar page.

Lost and Found Items

Irving’s Lost and Found is on display for all students to check during their lunch period. At the end of every month we wash and donate all clothing, lunchboxes, and water bottles. If you child has lost an item, please advise them to check for it during lunch. We will make announcements  the week up to donation day to remind students to claim their belongings. If you would like to inquire about an item, please email bekirtner@fcps.edu

Library News

If they have not done so already, 7th grade students will be visiting the library this coming week to choose a narrative nonfiction book for their next book project.  In case some of you parents are wondering, the term “narrative nonfiction,” means that the book is a true, factual account, but told in a story form, with a clear beginning, middle and end.  Students will have had access to an internal website that we’ve made to assist students in finding library narrative nonfiction titles that are of interest to them; please note that the library has multiple copies of these titles, but not enough for every 7th grader to have the same nonfiction book.  If your child is not able to borrow from our library the book that he / she desires, please check for that title at Fairfax County Public Libraries or consider purchasing a copy.

8th grade students will be visiting in early February to have a lesson about internal text structures and literary elements and to select a book for their third-quarter reading project.

We’re happy to be able to teach your children in the classroom setting, as well as assist them in the library.
