Next week is a Wild Card/Make Up Week, which means our students will be revisiting the character strengths learned so far and making up any they might have missed.
The halls of Colin Powell are alive with the sound of music. Colin Powell’s Music Team is comprised of EIGHT talented music educators who model best musicianship practices in and out of the classroom. Our goal is to instill a love of music in Kindergarten that crescendos through students’ 6th grade ensembles and beyond.
In the music classrooms…
- We teach teamwork and dedication.
- We promote perseverance and a growth mindset.
- We challenge students to be critical and creative thinkers.
- We encourage students to take risks and celebrate their success.
- We speak a universal language.
- We educate students to be tuneful, beautiful and artful so they can participate in the music that is interwoven throughout our lives.
General Music
Cheryl Baker started her teaching career in a small school district in northern Montana where she taught K - 12 grade music. She moved to Lodi, California and then to Las Vegas, NV for most of her career, teaching K - 6th grade general music. She is finishing her 5th year in FCPS this year. She has two cats but no children, plus a loving husband (of 22 years). He works in process improvement with Six Sigma techniques. Ms. Baker’s favorite things include watching movies, reading fiction (mostly fiction or mysteries), public speaking and acting and directing in plays. She loves being part of the Colin Powell music team and teaching at Colin Powell.
Jennifer Burke started her teaching career at Powell and is celebrating her 14th year as a Proud Puma. She is also a Dedicated Duke (James Madison University), a Passionate Patriot (George Mason University) and a Musical Mother of a spunky first grader and a playful preschooler. Her husband is a United States Capitol Police Officer as well as a guitar player. Mrs. Burke’s favorite things include dance parties in her living room, watching Hallmark movies, and planning her family’s next Walt Disney World vacation. She absolutely loves being a part of Colin Powell’s All-Star Music Team!!
Estavia Rowe is a native Washingtonian whose musical roots are deeply grounded in her family church. Her love of music was developed during her education with her musical family, Levine School of Music, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and The University of the Arts. After 15 years here at C.P.E.S., you can find Ms. Rowe in her “music cave” with the music blasting, building relationships with her students through song. Her mission is to impact her students to become the best version of themselves in every situation life may bring. Music is more than just songs and dances; it is the essence of the human soul.
Avery Bouffard is a graduate of Messiah College and entered her teaching career at CPES this year. Ms. Bouffard is thrilled to be teaching in the same area she grew up in. She enjoys playing a variety of instruments including guitar, ukulele, and banjo! Outside of school, she likes taking her dog, Sadie, on walks, learning more about different cultures, and eating meals surrounded by family and friends. Ms. Bouffard is honored to be part of the wonderful Colin Powell community!
 Strings
Ruben McFarlane is a first-year teacher after graduating from Penn State University. Originally from outside Albany, NY, Mr. McFarlane has performed with the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic and DC String Workshop as a violist. Along with teaching at FCPS and CPES, he also teaches violin classes as part of the DC Youth Orchestra Program. Outside of school, he loves attending sporting events, especially New York Yankee games, and watching Law and Order reruns on Netflix.
Val Rauch has been teaching Strings for 8 years at CPES and 13 years in FCPS. After growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, she moved to Virginia to attend James Madison and George Mason Universities. Mrs. Rauch plays the viola and performs with the Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia. She loves learning and taking all sorts of classes (currently, tap dance). Her husband, Robert, is a school administrator in Loudoun County. Mrs. Rauch is very happy to be a part of the CPES music team!

Outside of school she enjoys performing regularly with the Fairfax Wind Symphony, walking for miles with her 11 year old rescue named Ginny, and traveling the world with her husband, Steve. When not at school, she can be found working with engaged couples to create invitations and other beautiful paper in her stationery studio, Staccato. Mrs. Harms loves creating music with the band students of Colin Powell and knows there is no better community with which to share her passion.
Laura Johnson is a native New Yorker who has lived in the NOVA area since receiving her undergraduate degree from George Mason University.
