This month, our students and staff will focus on the learner profile attribute of communicator. Students and staff will discuss and reflect on what it looks and sounds like to be an effective communicator.
As communicators we:
*express ourselves confidently and creatively in multiple ways and languages
*collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspective of other individuals and groups
Here are some ideas to promote the attribute of communicator at home:
- Encourage your child to stay in touch with family and friends who live in other places by writing a letter, sending an email, or making a phone call
- Encourage your child to explain how they might solve a math problem orally or by drawing a picture
- Discuss and model what it means to be a good listener. Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others
Here are some books that can support the conversation about being a communicator:

Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate the ones we love, and at Dogwood we also celebrate our love of reading. What better way to show our children how much we love them, than to snuggle up with a book? We invite you to join us on Thursday, February 14 for I Love to Read Day. Come visit your child’s classroom and take a little time to enjoy a book together.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
- Two hour delays are for the welfare of students and their families. When we have a 2 hour delay, doors open at 10:35 am. Please drop students off at 10:35 am. It is not safe for students to wait for extended periods of time in the cold temperatures.
- Kiss and Ride - please wait patiently in the Kiss and Ride line. Parking and getting out of the car only adds to the wait time for all. We appreciate your help in keeping the line moving!
- With cold weather upon us, we know that waiting outside is unpleasant, please plan to arrive close to dismissal time. When you enter the building, you must report immediately to the main office and sign in for the safety of all students. Visitors without identifying check in stickers will be asked to sign in or wait patiently outside.

In February, The Dogwood Café is getting a salad bar. Students will have the opportunity to choose fresh fruits, vegetables and proteins each day from the salad bar in addition to our hot lunch options. This healthy addition will add to our students lunchroom experience. Students will receive a salad bar lesson during the week of February 11th so that they will learn salad bar etiquette and healthy habits. Watch this video for more information.
Dear Parent,
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is studying how school environments relate to discipline practices in the Division. As part of the study, you will receive a survey from FCPS’ Office of Research and Strategic Improvement (ORSI). The surveys are designed to help FCPS understand your and your child’s thoughts about the school environment and how discipline is approached in their school.
Surveys to parents will be translated into multiple languages and come via eNotify.
Participation is voluntary for you and your child, and all responses will be anonymous.
I encourage you to participate in this important survey to help FCPS understand what is working well and where we can improve.
Thank you,
Mie Devers
