Terra Centre News 2-1-19

Terra Centre ES banner

Terra Centre Families,

We started 3rd quarter this week… though we haven’t been at school most of the week due to the inclement weather!  As a reminder, FCPS also has a Staff Development Day on Monday, February 4 so there is no school for students.

We hope you’ve been able to make the best of your time at home.  Spending time with family is just as important as going to school!  Academics are only one part of raising a well-rounded child.  Spending time together as a family builds self-esteem, strengthens family bonds, enhances communication, and develops positive behaviors.  Just yesterday at our Robinson Pyramid event, Rachel Bailey spoke with us about “Raising Children with Healthy Self-Esteem in a High-Pressure Culture.”  If you were unable to attend, check out her website at http://rachel-bailey.com/.

Despite the weather today, we are scheduled to have our glass mosaic mural installed this weekend! Terra Centre students and staff as well as artist, Ali Mirsky, have been working together since August to create a glass and ceramic mosaic mural masterpiece that will be unveiled at Arts Night on Tuesday, February 5.  The theme is “Terra Centre Elementary:  Planting Ideas, Growing Minds.”  We hope you’ll be able to join us for the unveiling of this 85+ square foot mural in our entryway.  Thank you to our PTA for supporting this amazing project!

Please see below for updates from Terra Centre and Robinson.  Enjoy the long weekend!

Burke Centre Library

GIVE Youth is a nonprofit organization run by high school students that offers a free tutoring program for K-6 students.  They provide this tutoring program in twenty locations at various libraries and community centers across the Northern Virginia region.  They have now extended this program to Burke Centre Library.  This is an amazing opportunity that allows students to get ahead in school and get the help they need from high school tutors.  Interested parents can register their child or learn more about their organization on their website at giveyouth.org or they can email at burke.centre@giveyouth.org

Volunteers Needed for TC Arts Night 2019

On Tuesday evening, February 5, 2019, we will celebrate Arts Night at Terra Centre. As in past years, the event will feature artwork from every child in the school grades K - 6. This year will be extra special because we will be unveiling the glass and ceramic MURAL that the students have been creating under the guidance of artist Ali Mirsky.

In addition, we will have:

  • Musical performance by 3rd grade
  • Ocean Animal exhibits by 5th grade
  • Rock painting
  • FOOD FOR SALE from Papa Johns and Glory Days by the 6th grade fundraising committee

If you are able to help, we need some volunteers to pull this off!
