Registration Information

Last week we held our Curriculum Night and Electives Fair.  Here is a link to our registration information, including the presentations and materials from last week:  https://mcleanhs.fcps.edu/student-services/academic-advising.  Counselors will begin meeting with students this week to plan their courses for next year.  All students will be assigned a time slot to come to Student Services.  Freshmen and Sophomores will come down through their HPE classes and Juniors will come down through their US History courses.  Please do not send students down to see their counselor ahead of their assigned time, as they will be working with the scheduled classes.  Here is the schedule:

Juniors               January 31 – February 25

Sophomores      February 11 – February 27

Students can check with their HPE or US History teacher to find out the specific day and time that their class is scheduled to come to Student Services.

One new addition to this year’s process is that students will be entering their courses electronically through StudentVue.  This can actually be done right now.  Students will still receive individual academic advising sessions to complete the process, but they are encouraged to begin entering their courses electronically ahead of time.  Although the entering courses in StudentVue is fairly intuitive, an email will be sent out to all students with instructions showing how to do it.

Junior Focus Day - February 12

It’s time for Juniors to start thinking about post-high school plans, and Student Services is here to support you!

On Tuesday, February 12, McLean Juniors will have the opportunity to attend informational sessions on the post-secondary process and options during the first two blocks of the school day.  Students will choose four sessions to attend from 11 different options including a mock college admissions panel, military service, gap year, employment skills and more.

College Planning Night - February 12

The evening of February 12, we invite all parents and students to join us for college planning night.  Five deans of admission will be on site to speak about the college process and answer your questions. Sophomore and Junior parents in particular – don’t miss this opportunity to hear from admissions professionals about the college search and application process.  We look forward to seeing you there!

AP Exam Opt-Out Forms and Fee Reminder

FCPS strongly encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. Due to policy changes regarding FCPS AP exam fees, students now have the opportunity to opt out of any test(s) by submitting an opt-out form.  All AP students will receive an AP exam opt-out form during 3rd period on Tuesday, January 15th.

Please keep in mind that FCPS will pay the test fees for the first six AP tests taken for courses in which a student is currently enrolled for high school credit or auditing. Students choosing to take one or more AP tests beyond the six FCPS-funded tests will be charged a fee of $93 per AP test. For more information about the test fee process visit the FCPS website:  https://www.fcps.edu/testfees

No action is needed for students who wish to take all AP tests for the courses in which they are currently enrolled.  To opt-out of an AP test, students/parents must complete the AP opt-out form and return it to the Student Services office by Wednesday, February 6, 2019.  Students who do not submit this opt out form by the deadline and later do not sit for an AP test for which they were registered will be charged an additional fee of $15 per unused AP test.

Note for students enrolled in AP Economics or AP US & Comparative Government: The curriculum for these two AP courses is assessed through two separate AP tests. The two tests for these courses will be considered as one test for the FCPS-funded test count and fees.

Note for students enrolled in AP Capstone courses (Seminar and Research):  The College Board exam fee for these courses is $142.00, however, FCPS students (beyond the six FCPS funded tests) will only incur a $93.00 fee.
