Health Room News (All Grades)
We are working to ensure all our students have a healthy and happy start to the new year. To help us in that effort, our custodians and staff continue to do a wonderful job keeping our school clean for our students, staff, and school community. We continue to proactively monitor our absences to ensure our students’ continued success and health, and we need your help.
Students with a fever of 100.4 or above should not come to school. They should remain at home until fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication. Students experiencing vomiting or diarrhea should remain at home until symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.
When reporting student illness via the CRES Online Absence Form, please be specific to include medical symptoms and temperature if there is a fever.
Other everyday preventative actions:
-
Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
-
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
-
Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.
-
Wash hands often.
Medication Guidelines from the Health Room (All Grades)
When medication must be administered during the school day, please follow the guidelines established in the current version of FCPS Regulation 2102:
- Each and every medication in school mustbe accompanied by a completed FCPS Medication, Epinephrine, or Inhaler Authorization form (available online at fcps.edu).
- Each medication mustbe in a properly labeled container (your pharmacist will usually provide an extra container if you request it). The label must match the physician’s order as written on the med authorization.
- All medications must be transported to and from school by a parent or guardian.
- All medications mustbe kept in the school health room or other school-approved location.
- All medications require a physician signature EXCEPT:
- Over the Counter (OTC) medications may be given for up to ten consecutive school days with only the parent’s or guardian’s signature on the FCPS Medication Authorization form. After10 days a physician’s signature is required.
- OTC medications that are pain relievers for headaches, orthodontic, muscle, or menstrual pain may be given as needed throughout the school year with only the parent’s or guardian’s signature on the FCPS Medication Authorization form.
- Cough drops and throat lozenges may be carried and used by students in kindergarten through grade 12 as needed throughout the school year, provided that they are in the original container or packaging. Students must not share cough drops or throat lozenges under any circumstances.
Students with a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher should stay home and be fever free without medication for at least 24-hours before returning to school.

Crossing Guard Appreciation Day Is February 13 (All Grades)
Attention all CRES walkers and bike riders!! Wednesday, February 13th is Crossing Guard Appreciation Day! The families of the walkers are planning to appreciate Ms. Edie, our amazing crossing guard, in a big way this year. Every day Ms. Edie helps the walkers and bike riders arrive to school safely – and she always has a smile on her face and a kind word for all! On this special day, let’s take the time to tell her how grateful we are to have her. You can write her a short thank you note, you can bring her a smile or hug, or you can tell her “thank you” in person. Ms. Edie is a great example of all of our Colvin Run Character Traits …. We are very lucky to have her as part of our CRES family!

Kindergarten Corner: Wolf Trap Residencies (Kindergarten)
Mrs. Clubb and Mrs. Reed’s kindergarten classes had the pleasure of hosting a Wolf Trap teaching artist within each of their classrooms to integrate the fine arts with literacy. This opportunity was made possible due to the partnership CRES has with the Wolf Trap Performing Arts Center. In Mrs. Clubb’s class, Mr. Kofi, a master teaching artist in the field of music, visited to focus on the story elements of characters and setting using the book, Share, Big Bear, Share! Students participated in imaginary travel where they visualized being in a forest, thought about how they would get there, and what they would encounter on the way while exploring their usage of voice and body to identify different emotions. Students sang and tapped songs that allowed them to keep different beats while singing.
Meanwhile, in Mrs. Reed’s class, Ms. Richardson, a master teaching artist in the field of dramatics, shared the story Annie and the Wild Animals to focus on the story elements of character and setting. Students gained confidence in using their voice and body to portray a character from the story and used simple props that sparked their imaginations and creativity. Students were able to retell the story with a beginning, middle, and ending by acting out the story and “becoming” a certain character from the story. Ms. Richardson emphasized the importance of using our imaginations and how they can take us anywhere or become anything we want to be.
First Grade PBL (1st Grade)
Colvin Run first grade Architects completed their first PBL by creating blueprints for a future addition to Colvin Run. The project began with an introduction event by Mr. Junge requesting their help in creating an addition to the school that they felt Colvin Run needed. Creative ideas ranged from indoor recess rooms, outdoor “tree houses,” nature rooms, and an obstacle course room. Students used their knowledge of geometric figures to portray items they would like in their creative spaces. Their map skills and vocabulary were sharpened when collaborating with their group members about where and why objects were placed in certain areas of their blueprint. Map keys were used to define each groups specific geometric shapes used in their blueprint. To close the unit the classes enjoyed sharing with their peers and other 1st grade classes, as well as a special visit from Mr. Junge!
Langley Area Honor Band Concert (5th & 6th Grades)
On Friday, January 25th at Langley High School, 17 of Colvin Run’s 6th Grade Advanced Band students performed with the Langley Area Honor Band at the Langley High School Auditorium.
This band was made up of the most advanced elementary school band students from Churchill Road, Colvin Run, Forestville, Great Falls, and Spring Hill elementary schools. Colvin Run students who participated were: Wesley B., Tyler G., Jacqui G., Claire G., Anderson H., Zelmay J., Christian K., Katelyn L., Ethan L., Kevin M., Dylan R., Anniyah R., Gus S., Alexa S., MacPhearson S., Eric Z. and Valerie Z.
Students prepared their music at home and with their school directors during December and January and then spent only one afternoon putting it all together for the evening concert. Our students represented CRES well and had a wonderful experience playing with other students from our pyramid. The concert was conducted by Mr. Matt Baker and Mrs. Alex Singer, the directors at Cooper Middle School. We were fortunate enough to also have the Langley High School Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Doug Martin, perform one piece for the students at the end of the concert.
FCPS Digital Device Info & Tips (4th-6th Grades)
If you purchased a device for your child this holiday season, FCPS wants to help you support your child in the online world. If the device is internet-enabled, please consider the following tips and resources:
Educate yourself and your children.
Digital citizenship is learning process and your child will need sustained support from parents and teachers. Visit bit.ly/fairfaxdigcit for a fun and interactive parent-child course that can help your family start conversations about navigating the online world.
Establish rules and expectations.
Have you thought about the rules you want to establish with your child for setting up accounts and the privacy settings you expect your child to use? What are your expectations and how will you monitor your child’s online activities? Not sure where to start? Try these tip sheets, media agreements, and device contracts.
Help your child monitor and manage their screen time.
It’s easy to spend hours on a device, especially when it's new. Use these guidelines and strategies to help your children learn to monitor and manage their screen time.
Discuss privacy settings and accounts.
Teach your child to protect their personal information and model the use of privacy settings. Discuss why these settings are important and teach them how to make privacy setting choices for every app and service they use. This resource can help you get started.
Give your child action steps.
Discuss potential situations that may arise before they happen and give your child action steps. Do they know what to they can do if cyber bullied, harassed, or if someone sends them something they don’t want to see? Every difficult situation is an opportunity to help prepare them for life beyond your home. These short parent advice videos, which can be filtered by topic and age, can help you identify action steps you can share with your child.
Teach your child to assess risks and make good choices.
Online communication is public and permanent. Talk with your children regularly and remind them that what they do online can impact future opportunities. Their online reputation can also affect their relationships in the face to face world.
