LONGFELLOW TRAFFIC BY CHESTERBROOK ASSISTED LIVING

Please do not drop your child off at the top of the drive at Chesterbrook Assisted Living.  It can be quite hazardous for employees of Chesterbrook Assisted Living to get into work most mornings while contending with these issues. Longfellow has a Kissn’Ride lane and all students should be dropped off by DOOR 5 and not anywhere along Westmoreland. Thank you for being courteous to our neighbors and each other.


VALENTINE’S DAY CROCK-POT CHILI LUNCHEON - FEBRUARY 14

On Valentine’s Day, we are treating our teachers and staff to a crock pot chili luncheon.  Please sign up to provide a crock-pot full of chili or one of the many other items we need to make this lunch a success.  Here is Signup Genius link - Valentine's Day Crockpot Chili Luncheon - Thursday, Feb. 14  Donations need to be dropped off by 9:30 a.m. the morning of the luncheon in the Food Lab. CALLING ALL STEAM NIGHT VOLUNTEERS

WESTGATE FAMILY MATH NIGHT

Thursday, March 14 (Pi day!), 6:00-7:30 pm
Students interested in volunteering should come help set up at 4:30 and stay to clean up after the event. Food will be provided for those who volunteer the entire time, 4:30-7:40.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) McLean Area Branch 2019 STEM Essay Contest

The STEM Essay Contest challenges the students to discover and publicize women who made a difference in STEM fields. Each student is asked to write an essay of no more than 500 words to discuss the impact of one woman's contribution to STEM and why he or she picked that woman. We will award four prizes: First Place ($100), Second Place ($50), and Honorable Mention (2 Prizes, each $25).
Essay Theme: Women have not always been recognized for their contributions in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This essay contest challenges 7th and 8th grade students, girls and boys, to discover and publicize women who made a difference in STEM fields. Tell us why you selected the woman and share the impact of her STEM contribution.
Essay Submission:
-The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, February 15, 2019, at 12:00 midnight EST. No late submissions will be accepted.
-Students must download this PDF file, fill in the required information, and upload the saved file to a Dropbox folder on the following website: https://www.dropbox.com/request/KHgpuOxYtgvYxWrZ2Rs2 (No Dropbox account is required to do this.)
-Students should type their essays and bibliography into the spaces allotted on this application form. Applications in the LMS main office.
-Only one essay submission per student is permitted.


RISING 9TH GRADE COURSE REGISTRATION FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

We are excited to prepare your students for high school!  Please review the following information regarding the high school course selection process. 
February 5: Deadline for students to enter course requests on-line in SIS and return completed paper course request forms to their Longfellow counselor.
February 5 through February 8: Longfellow counselors conduct individual academic advising sessions with all 8th graders to review and finalize course requests.

Course request changes: If you would like to change a course request after March 4, please submit the request to McLean High School.

Students attending other high schools: Students will be contacted by their Longfellow counselor and given registration materials.  The same deadlines apply, however students not attending McLean will not enter course requests in SIS; they only use a paper form.


EDUCATION FIRST STUDY TOUR

Mr. McElroy is organizing an 11-day whirlwind Education First study tour of Japan, “The Land of the Rising Sun”, scheduled for late June 2019.  Tour stops will include Tokyo, Kamakura, Hakone, Odawara, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima and more!  If you are at all interested, please e-mail Mr. McElroy (MBMcElroy@fcps.edu), ASAP.  Space is limited!

Get Out & Exercise 60 Minutes a Day
Did you know being more physically active can lead to better grades, improved focus and memory, boost your energy, and can even reduce stress? We need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Don’t have time for a full hour? Fit your fitness activities into smaller, 10-15 minute bursts that work with your schedule. Be a role model for the students in your life -- increasing your physical activity each day can lead to a happier, healthier you!
