Weyanoke Weekly Update for January 30, 2019

Student and teacher dressed alike during Weyanoke Spirit Week

This week, we celebrated SCA Spirit Week with themed dress-up days. Thursday was Dress Like a Teacher Day, and Ms. Spears students really got in the spirit! This creative first grader not only copied Ms. Spears' hairstyle and style of dress, she even wore a blue layard and made her own "teacher ID badge"!

Candy Grams for Sale

It’s time for the S.C.A. Candy Gram sale! A candy gram is a lollipop attached to a card that is delivered at school on Valentine’s Day.

Candy grams may be purchased at school for 25¢ each starting Tuesday, February 5th through Friday, February 8th. All candy grams must be filled out and returned to Ms. Bryant, Ms. Wooding, or Mrs. Fleming-Hernandez by Monday, February 11th.

Candy grams will be delivered on Thursday, February 14th.

Your child may buy candy grams in the cafeteria before school, or you may fill out the form and return it to your child’s teacher. Then, we will send home the blank candy grams for you to fill out with your child.

Tissues Requested

It's cold and flu season, and our classrooms are going through tissues quickly! The tissues our students brought in at the start of the year have been used, and our teachers are asking for help from our community to meet this need. Please donate boxes of tissues to your child's classroom.

Thank you!

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are behaviors that can lead to serious health problems.  These behaviors can begin as a child, and affect both girls and boys.  When discovered early, eating disorders are treatable.  In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system provide information to parents annually about eating disorders.  This information is given to parents of students in the fifth through twelfth grades and was sent home with students in grades 5 and 6 this week.

It is important to note that eating disorders are not identified based on weight changes as much as behaviors and attitudes.  Signs of eating disorders may differ between males and females and in different age groups.  Often, a young person may not recognize the signs that they might have an eating disorder.  Parents/guardians and family members are in a position to notice behaviors that cause concern.  It is important that a child with an eating disorder be treated early by someone who understands this type of care.

After reviewing the information in this week's letter, if you think your child may be showing signs of a possible eating disorder, please contact your doctor, school nurse, or one of the resources listed below.

Make Plans for Inclement Weather

PLEASE DO NOT PHONE THE SCHOOL!!!

When Fairfax County Public Schools have a schedule change (closing or delay) due to inclement weather or other emergencies, the information is communicated as soon as the decision is made in these ways:

  1. Posted on fcps.edu.
  2. Posted to the FCPS Twitter and Facebook
  3. Email and text messages sent to parents and employees.
  4. Email sent to News You Choose subscribers of Delayed Openings and School Closings.
  5. Posted on FCPS cable Channel 21 (Cox Communications, Reston Comcast, and Verizon cable customers only).
  6. Area radio and television stations.
  7. REMEMBER, Weyanoke is a Fairfax County Public School.

Parents are urged to make arrangements now for the care of their children when schedule changes are made (and to provide for the rare situation when it is necessary to close an individual school because of a power failure or other circumstances). Children should know where to go or what to do if a parent will not be at home.
