February 5th is the Chinese New Year. As a tradition, red is China's good luck color, believed to scare away spirits of bad fortune. Chinese usually wear red or other brightly-colored clothes on New Year's Day to go with the festive and upbeat mood. There will be a Chinese New Year Celebration at Fair Oaks Mall on February 2nd and 3rd from 1-5pm. This Lunar New Year Event will celebrate the Year of the Boa and will include martial arts and dance performances from over 15 countries.

National School Counseling Week 2019 will be celebrated from February 4-8, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. School counselors have a tremendous impact in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Oak Hill would like to thank our counselors, Mrs. Kimberly Gallagher and Mrs. Christy Ryder, for all of their hard work and dedication.
If you would like to send Mrs. Gallagher or Mrs. Ryder a note through the FCPS Cares recognition program, please click here.

Kindness is contagious! The more our students see, hear, and practice kindness, the more it will become a part of their everyday lives. At Oak Hill, we will be celebrating Random Acts of Kindness week February 11-15. Please be on the lookout for a red heart and a pink sheet of paper in their backpack tomorrow. The pink sheet of paper will explain what to do with the red heart. We are excited to see what kind things our students are doing for others at home and in the community.
Kindness Ideas:
Ask your child how he or she showed kindness at school. It can be as simple as holding open a door for someone or smiling at a classmate. Praise your child for showing kindness!
Be a “Kindness Detective” with your child as you read a book together or watch a movie. Ask your child to reflect on how a character showed kindness and the impact that it had on other characters.
Please visit these websites for additional ways to help kids practice kindness, https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/kindness-ideas and http://micheleborba.com/100-fun-ways-to-help-kids-practice-kindness/
