FAMILY MATH GAME NIGHT
THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2019
6:00pm - 7:30pm
The VRES school staff has invited all families to our family game night. Come prepared to participate in fun, math-centered games. The best part is you will get to keep the games that you play. This is a great way to reinforce the skills the students are learning in school. This is NOT a drop off event, please plan to on staying and playing the games with you child/children. Please RSVP to your child's teacher so we know how many materials to prepare. You can either email the teacher or use the form provided here.
VRES Winter Coat Drive
January 14 – January 31
Brrr! It’s cold outside! Some kids in our community don’t have warm coats to wear this winter….let’s help keep everyone warm! Donate a new or gently used coat to our VRES Winter Coat Drive from January 14 – January 31. Coats will be delivered to a local non-profit (Second Story) for distribution. The collection box is in the main lobby. THANK YOU!
Variety Show
We are hoping to continue the tradition of the VRES Variety Show this year! The show has been scheduled for March 24th and we will be having our parent meeting for all those interested in participating on Wednesday, Feb. 6th at 4:15 in the cafeteria. There is a chance the show will not go on if we do not have enough interest so please plan to attend this meeting or email Kari Lowery to let us know your act/group info and intent to participate. Details and rehearsal schedules will be given out at this meeting. Any questions, please feel free to contact Kari Lowery at kariken@verizon.net.

School Year 2019-2020 Immersion Program Information
Each year, rising kindergarteners and first graders have the chance to participate in Immersion programs available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish offered at: Bailey’s, Fort Hunt, Fox Mill, Great Falls, Kent Gardens, Lake Anne, Laurel Ridge, London Towne, Orange Hunt, Powell, Ravensworth, and Rose Hill elementary schools through a county-wide lottery process. Online registration for this lottery process opens on January 28, 2019. Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County. A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required. Please be aware that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the immersion schools and a one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).
In the Immersion Program, children spend half of the day in the target language learning math, science, and health. Target language arts skills are integrated in the content area skills. The other half of the day is spent learning in English focusing on English language arts and social studies. The instructional program follows the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies at each grade level. Math, science, and health were chosen because they use manipulatives and concrete, hands-on activities, both of which help with the natural second language acquisition process. Students are able to connect the skills learned across both languages.
Program Sites and Informational Meetings
