A note from Dr. Goodloe:
Dear Rocky Run Families,
Can you believe we have made it half way through the 2018-19 school year? We have truly had a great (short) week here at Rocky Run and the students have done a wonderful job remaining focused as we wrap up 2nd quarter and the first semester of the year. A few highlights:
- We recognized Students of the Month for December from all teams.
- Congratulations to After School Program Assistant, Morgan Thomas, on being recognized as the Chantilly Pyramid Outstanding Hourly Employee. Her nomination now moves on to the Region level.
- Our staff is looking forward to welcoming rising Rams from several of our elementary feeder schools to visit and tour RRMS on Monday, January 28, 2019.
- The RRMS Theater Sports team won first place at their most recent competition.
Curriculum Night:
Parents and guardians of rising 7th graders are invited to join our staff for a curriculum overview and electives open house on Tuesday, January 29, 2019. Join us starting at 5:30 for optional sessions including a meet and greet with administrators that will include updates on our renovation project and a peek at new spaces. Please note: this event is for adults only. Students have received the information at their elementary visits.
Parking Reminders:
As you know, parking at Rocky Run is extremely limited. Visitors to RRMS should park in the marked Visitors spots or the lot closer to entrance door 2, the one on the left as you face the front of the building. The lot adjacent to door 1 (right side) is reserved for teachers and staff. We have several part time employees and staff who come and go during the day. Please leave these spots open for them. Thank you!
As always I welcome your feedback, suggestions, and questions. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time and I hope to see you at Rocky Run very soon.
Sincerely,
Amy T. Goodloe, Ed.D

Positivity Project - Prudence
This week teachers and students focused on the character trait of Prudence. What does this trait mean?
You plan for the future and achieve your goals by making careful everyday choices.
This is an especially important trait as our Student Services team and students enter Academic Advising Season. We hope you use lots of prudence as you choose classes for the next school year!
Read more about this trait here.

Online Course Registration
This year, Rocky Run will be using the online course request feature available in StudentVUE. Starting mid-January, students will begin receiving information about curriculum and course selections for the 2019-20 school year. Once students have received information about course options from the Student Services department, they may log in to StudentVUE and begin to select courses by clicking on the “Course Request” tab. This feature allows students to enter their courses prior to meeting with their school counselor, maximizing the time they have during individual academic advising.
We believe that parent involvement in course selection is very important. Parents or guardians are able to view their student’s course requests in ParentVUE as soon as students begin to enter them in StudentVUE. Parents or guardians are strongly encouraged to discuss course requests with their student(s) and to reach out to their student’s school counselor should there be any questions about courses entered or to request a change once selections have been finalized.
More information and details will be shared as we approach the academic advising season. Please reach out to your student’s school counselor with any questions you may have about this new process. We are excited to support our students with academic planning for the next school year.
International Night
Rocky Run Middle School is gearing up for our first action-packed, educational and delicious International Night which will take place on Wednesday, February 27th from 6:00-8:00 pm. We hope to make this year’s event a huge success. Please use this Google Form and let us know if you are interested in volunteering and helping us coordinate the event.

Under Construction: Renovation News
- The roof is on! Interior work in the addition is progressing rapidly now that we are under roof. Several classrooms on the first floor are currently being painted and having ceilings installed.
- Finishing touches on the new Kiss and Ride traffic circle off of Poplar Tree Road are going in. We anticipate opening the new traffic circle in the spring.
- Our renovation team is reviewing proposals for classroom furniture as we plan for the instructional spaces that will open in August 2019.
- Transformation of the old library into the new Lecture Hall is well under way. New walls are up and construction on the new student bathrooms has begun.
Air Quality: During construction, questions about indoor air quality arise. The most recent air quality tests from January met all standards. Regular spot checks around the building have also been taking place and are all within expected limits. The air quality inside the building is monitored at least once per month. Please visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.
If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu or call the Rocky Run MS main office at 703-802-7700.
We will post updates, pictures, timelines, etc on this page on our website. This page will also be linked as a static announcement on our homepage as we move through the renovation process.
