P2 Banner

This week, our students have focused on the trait of PRUDENCE.  This means that you plan for the future and achieve your goals by making careful everyday choices.

Starting next week, we are excited to begin the next OTHER PEOPLE MATTER MINDSET element -- supporting others when they struggle -- on Monday! The purpose of the Other People Matter Mindset weeks is to consistently remind students why they're learning to see these character strengths in themselves and others -- to build positive relationships.

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There is a Chinese saying that sums this up: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”

Spotlight on the Staff

Third grade team

Can You Name the Third Grade Teacher in These Riddles?

  1. I grew up in Oak Hill, VA and went to Chantilly High and JMU. In my free time, I like to read, hang out with my husband Tommy, and go the beach.   My favorites are the beach, Mexican Food, the color green and summer. I love teaching because I get to learn new things every day!   Who am I?
  2. I grew up in Chantilly, VA and went to Chantilly High School. In my free time I like to read, hike, play board games, and do anything with my 2 sons. My favorites are the color blue, the number 5, a warm cookie, a good book on a rainy day, and any day at the beach! I love teaching, because every day is different and exciting.  The days fly by! Who am I?
  3. I was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas and came to Virginia in 2003. In my free time I love to read, watch baseball games, explore nature, and hang out with my husband and two children. My favorites are the color yellow, playing games and doing puzzles with my family, and the Kansas City Royals. I love teaching because the students make every day meaningful and different. Who am I?
  4. I was born in Seoul, Korea and came to the US when I was 12 years old. I studied International Studies, Spanish, and Education in college. I love reading, traveling, and spending time with my family. My favorites are the color yellow, fall, books, musicals, and Christmas. I always wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. Who am I?
  5. I grew up in upstate New York. Grew up cross country skiing and ice skating as fun outdoor activities to do. I have 32 first cousins and got to see them recently at a family reunion. Favorites: color green, dairy queen cheesequake blizzards, shooting baskets with family, walking dog, and doing 1,000 piece White Mountain puzzles. I love teaching because I enjoy the enthusiasm students have when they have learned or discovered something new!  Who am I?

We want to hear your views on technology and learning!

Be a part of the conversation! Starting now, we will be participating in the Speak Up Research Project for    Digital Learning. Speak Up is and was the first online research tool designed to help parents share their ideas directly with schools and national policymakers. Speak Up provides parents with a mechanism for expressing their views to the administrators at their child(ren)’s school and district about key issues impacting their child(ren)'s education.

Since 2003, Speak Up has collected and shared the views of more than 5.4 million students, teachers, and parents from all 50 states, as well as internationally. By participating in Speak Up, parents are expressing their views to a wider audience of local, state, and national policy makers as well as the business community—and contributing to the national dialogue about how best to prepare students for the future.

Speak Up is open to students, educators and parents; it’s quick and easy to get involved.

This is an optional survey. To participate, visit: this link and select the Parent option.

All participation is confidential. Questions take about 20 minutes to complete.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your views with us! We need your input!

School Year 2019-2020 Immersion Program Information

Korean Immersion Application Process for School Year 2019 -2020

Parents, please note kindergarteners, CURRENTLY ENROLLED in the Korean Immersion program at Colin Powell, SHOULD NOT complete the online application process again. Your child will automatically be enrolled in the first grade Korean Immersion program upon your completion of a survey coming in January 2019.

Parents of kindergarteners who are NOT CURRENTLY ENROLLED in the Korean Immersion program at Colin Powell, but wish to apply for the 2019 -2020 school year, should follow the instructions below.

Each year, rising kindergarteners and first graders have the chance to participate in Immersion programs available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish offered at: Bailey’s, Fort Hunt, Fox Mill, Great Falls, Kent Gardens, Lake Anne, Laurel Ridge, London Towne, Orange Hunt, Powell, Ravensworth, and Rose Hill elementary schools through a county-wide lottery process. Online registration for this lottery process opens on January 28, 2019. Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County. A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required. Please be aware that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the immersion schools and a one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).

In the Immersion Program, children spend half of the day in the target language learning math, science, and health. Target language arts skills are integrated in the content area skills. The other half of the day is spent learning in English focusing on English language arts and social studies. The instructional program follows the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies at each grade level. Math, science, and health were chosen because they use manipulatives and concrete, hands-on activities, both of which help with the natural second language acquisition process. Students are able to connect the skills learned across both languages.

Program Sites and Informational Meetings

Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand Presents FCPS Budget for Fiscal Year 2020

Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand presented a $3.0 billion Proposed Budget for the 2019-20 school year (Fiscal Year 2020) to the Fairfax County School Board at its business meeting on January 10. The FY 2020 Proposed Budget, with a focus on employee compensation, represents an increase of $117.4 million, or 4.1 percent, over the FY 2019 Approved Budget.

“Student success begins and ends with a highly qualified teacher in every classroom, which is why the FY 2020 Proposed Budget continues to focus on our strategic priority of recruiting and retaining great teachers through market competitive compensation,” said Brabrand. “The proposed budget includes a $55.2 million investment in the teacher salary scales which is the final phase of a multi-year plan to bring teacher salaries to the market average and includes a 1.0 percent market scale adjustment. Our goal is to ensure that every student–by name and by need–receives an excellent and equitable education in a 21st-century learning environment with the very best teachers.”
