Glasgow Community Gazette - January 21

a

Glasgow Community:

I hope you had a great extended weekend. I had the pleasure of watching Glasgow’s Special Olympics Unified Basketball team play their first games of the year on Sunday afternoon. I was overwhelmed with effort and teamwork of the players, dedication of the coaches (Keely Norris, Oliva Shank and Megan Amelio) and support from Glasgow staff members in attendance.

This Thursday marks the final day of the 2nd quarter and Friday is a Teacher Workday. I encourage you to monitor your student’s grades in SIS (through StudentView or your ParentView accounts) and touch base with their teachers if you have any questions. Please keep in mind that report cards will be distributed to students on Friday, February 1.

Special thanks in advance to the Glasgow PTA for sponsoring a Salad/Potato Bar this Friday. If you would like to volunteer with this event, see below for more information.

Finally, a huge shout out to the Glasgow students for their hard work and dedication on Friday. Students were engaged in their Panther Time lesson on academic advising and focused during the school-wide Writing Sample/Grammar Assessment. These assessments will provide teachers with evidence of our students’ learning needs and abilities. In addition, teachers will be able to plan more targeted, purposeful instruction for our students moving forward.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

TJHSST Admissions - Semifinalists Just Announced - Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology semifinalists were announced this Friday, January 18 through the online system. Glasgow students that are selected as semifinalists will need to send out teacher recommendation request through their online system as soon as possible, the deadline for teacher submission is January 25 and testing date is Saturday, February 9.

Parents please encourage your student to start planning now which teachers they will request recommendations from if they become semifinalists. TJ is looking for students to obtain 2 teacher recommendations; one must be a 7th or 8th grade math or science teacher, the other can be any 7th or 8th grade teacher. The recommendations are done online only and submitted directly to TJ by each teacher. Semifinalists will meet with our TJ counselor liaisons for more information about the process and reminders.

If you have any questions please reach out to our TJ Liaison Counselor Greg Franz at gdfranz@fcps.edu or (703) 813-8733.

2019-2020 Course Registration for Rising 8th and 7th Graders - Glasgow Student Services is excited to begin meeting with your students to register them for next year’s courses! Counselors will meet one-on-one with each student to review course options and complete the course selection form. Sometime before March 15, your student will bring home a copy of their selections for you to sign and return within three days. Here is a link to the Glasgow course descriptions: https://insys.fcps.edu/CourseCatOnline/#/frontPanel/360/nocourselist/1/1/1

In addition, 6th and 7th grade students learned about course options in Panther Time last week.  Students explored the kinds of classes they can take, the difference between general education and honors classes, and what choices they have for electives. After reviewing the information students completed a “think sheet” to practice selecting their classes.

This Thursday, 7th grade students will watch a video on the elective offerings during FIT.   Our goal is to empower students to feel confident about their educational choices and continue these conversations at home.

Please note that all course request changes are due by April 12, 2019. Finalizing requests by this date allows us to invest in staffing and resources based on students’ needs and interests. We will be finalizing schedules and placements throughout the late Spring and summer months.

Glasgow Goodies!

Thank You for the Gift Card Donations - Thank you to those of you who donated gift cards. We conducted a 'Panther Card for Staff Members' last week and drew 25 winners! A few weeks ago, students wrote Panther Cards to recognize a staff member who demonstrates our Panther Principles.  Teachers who revived Panther Cards submitted them into a drawing to win a donated gift card.

It is amazing how much a $5 gift card is appreciated. If you would still like to donate gift cards, please feel free to drop them off at the main office or drop them in the mail to my attention. I will share the love with staff throughout the school year. Thank you so much! (It can be for any business you want to support, in any amount. Nothing is too small!)

Congrats to Glasgow’s Special Olympics Basketball Team! Glasgow’s Special Olympics Unified Basketball team played (and won) their first games of the year this past Sunday. Congrats to the players and coaches (Keely Norris, Oliva Shank and Megan Amelio)!
