Underclass College Planning Night

Wednesday, February 6 - 7:00 pm in the Auditorium

It may seem far away but in a flash your child will be applying to college. Jessica Grenfell, DSS, and Signe Yock, FCHS Parent & Admissions Consultant, will present on what you can do now to make the college application process less stressful and possibly even fun. We’ll show you free resources, points to consider for course selection, timelines, and how to approach the process.

Parents of 9th and 10th graders are encouraged to attend and 11th grade are welcome. In March, Renee Foster (Career Center Specialist) has invited college reps to speak to families of current 11th grade students on the specifics of the college application. Watch for the details on day and location. Questions can be directed to Jessica Grenfell.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Opt-out Forms

If your child is taking an AP course, he/she will be receiving an individualized report addressing the AP exam fee. We are distributing the letter directly to students in one of their AP courses the week of January 22nd. Please remind them to share the letter with you. If you need a new copy, please contact your child’s School Counselor.

This letter is the next step in the AP exam fee process. FCPS will pay for six exams in the course of a student’s time with FCPS. The letter identifies your child’s AP exam history and the current 2018-19 AP classes. If your family decides to opt-out of one or more of this years AP exams, the form must be received by Amy Marketos or Katherine Vargas, School Counselors, no later than Friday, February 1st.

Billing for AP exam fees will be done through MySchoolBucks beginning April 2019. Click here for more information. Students who qualify for the free and reduced-price meals program and have submitted the consent to share their free and reduced-price status will not be charged for these fees in accordance with their waiver selections on the fee consent form. These forms can be found on the Food and Nutrition Services, Free and Reduced-Price Meals web page.

The payment of student fees is the responsibility of parents and guardians. However, for students and families who are undergoing economic hardships and are financially unable to pay the stated student fees, assistance is available as noted in the current version of Regulation 2135, Assistance to Students. Please contact your child’s school counselor to determine your eligibility.

Student Directed One Acts

We are working towards two wonderful evenings of theatre on January 24th and 25th!  The student directed one acts allow Theatre 3, 4 students to direct a play and Tech Theatre 1 and 2 students to work sound, lights, costumes and props in support of these productions.  As it is a co-curricular event, admission is free!  Donations and patronage are ALWAYS welcome!

This year our plays are as follows:

January 24th.  This night will include plays suitable for ALL audiences.  It will conclude with the induction of 9 new members of the Thespian Honor Society!

EVERYTHING I NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED BY BEING IN A BAD PLAY by Werner Trieschmann and directed by Tathiana Alvarado (12).

Based on several disastrous theatrical experiences, Bad Play peels back a tattered curtain to examine the process of putting on a show that is less than good. A stuffy narrator (what bad play is complete without a stuffy narrator?) guides the audience through the whole sorry process. We go from the audition—where the director is more worried about roast beef than paying attention to the warm-up exercise, and the neurotic cast pretends to be bacon—to rehearsals—where a passive-aggressive stage manager gives everyone grief. There's also a special meeting of the Small Part Support Group and a production of Romeo and Juliet set in a Starbucks with costumes of potato sacks and bowler hats.

HOPE AND HEARTACHE DINER by Lindsay Price and directed by Dolly Lebow (11).

Diners are a special place. You can get your coffee, fall in love, and find light when the world is dark. Duke’s is a family business - four generations strong. Felix wants one last hurrah before leaving for college. He’s doing the full run - open to close - just like his grandpa did when he was a teenager. But why? Everyone knows Felix can barely wipe tables. Why is he trying so hard to connect? And what happens when Felix’s parents announce they’re selling the diner?

January 25th.  This night will include plays that may NOT be suitable for all audiences.  These plays include language and content that may be uncomfortable for some viewers.

PERFECT SCORE by Katie Henry and directed by Sarah Jones (12).

Four friends -- a hippie, a jock, a perfectionist, and a slacker -- negotiate the college application process as graduation day rapidly approaches. SATs and GPAs are just a part of their worries, as senioritis, awkward interviews, and the pressure to succeed provide even bigger hurdles in the race to the fat-envelope finish line.

LOCKDOWN by Douglas Craven directed by Laurel Gilbert (10).

In a dark classroom, eight students sit in an "official lockdown," not knowing if it's just a drill or an actual emergency. When a hysterical younger girl bolts from the room and the teacher follows, the remaining students are left alone to decide if it's safer to stay or run.

BOB: A LIFE IN FIVE ACTS by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb and directed by Annie Stamp (11) and Elsa Deitz (12)

THE STORY: BOB chronicles the highly unusual life of Bob and his lifelong quest to become a "Great Man." Born and abandoned in the bathroom of a fast food restaurant, Bob energetically embarks on an epic journey across America and encounters inspiring generosity, crushing hardships, blissful happiness, stunning coincidences, wrong turns, lucky breaks, true love and heartbreaking loss. Along the way, Bob meets a myriad of fellow countrymen all struggling to find their own place in the hullaballoo of it all. Will Bob's real life ever be able to live up to his dream? BOB is a comedic exploration of American mythology and values, the treacherous pursuit of happiness, and discovering what it means to be truly "great."

Parents of High School Seniors—Get Help Completing the FAFSA

Parents of high school seniors—did you know that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open and most colleges require that the FAFSA be completed by March 1 to receive the maximum financial aid possible starting in fall of 2019?

Some schools have even earlier priority deadlines, so always check the individual college’s financial aid office website for deadlines. Parents and students should start by creating an FSA ID and then begin the FAFSA. Find additional links on the FCPS FAFSA Website.

Need help completing and submitting the FAFSA? There are a few FAFSA workshops remaining this school year:

  • February 2, 2019, 9 a.m. to noon at Mount Vernon High School.
  • February 6, 2019, 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Lee High School.
  • February 7, 2019, 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Westfield High School.
  • February 27, 2019, 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Annandale High School.

Register to attend the College Access Fairfax workshops on the College Access Fairfax website.

Partners for Safe Teen Driving

The state of Virginia requires all 10th grade students and their parent/guardian to attend a 90-minute traffic safety program as part of the classroom driver education instruction. The dates for this year's presentations are:

  • April 10, 2019 (Cafeteria)
  • May 8, 2019 (Cafeteria)

All programs will begin PROMPTLY at 7:00 pm.  There will be no admittance once the program has begun.  You are strongly encouraged to mark your calendar now and plan to attend.
