From the Principal

Family,

It has been a week!  A cancellation, a couple of delays, and a letdown by a phony storm!  But we made it and we continue to improve as a school community.  I am happy to say that coming back from a holiday break, even two weeks into it, our students are adjusting well to getting back on to reaching their academic goals. With the Friday, 3-hour early closing, the staff made good use of their opportunity to plan together and look at achievement data to this point.  Curriculum teams met, as well as full departments to develop strategies to help students make the most gains as we close out the semester.

I along with another administrator again took the time to make the trek over to the middle school to meet with those teachers and administrators to see what work they are doing that we could incorporate to make the transition for students smoother.  We are committed to bridging the relationship and extending the Family feel to our feeder school.

Our student directory, produced by the PTSO, is now available!  Unless you opted out of participating in the directory, you should have recently received an email asking you to verify your directory information.  Directory information comes from the school, so if it is incorrect, you can correct it when you verify, but you also should make the call to Ms. Kelly Watkins at 703.446.1634.  The Verification Wizard is a simple process asking families to verify their household information for our directory. This process should take no more than 5 minutes of your time.  Once you complete the wizard, you will be connected to our online directory!  Click on the Auto Login Link you received in the email from the PTSO to get started! You can use the Forgot Password link to reset your login information.  If you have a question about the directory or verification process, you can contact the PTSO's directory coordinator, Kidada Bivens, at kbivins17@gmail.com

Note that while anyone can go in and verify their information, only PTSO members have access to the whole directory.  To join the PTSO, click here: https://southcountyptso.membershiptoolkit.com/Open_Forms

Please be on the lookout for information on MTSS (Multi-Tier System of Supports).  MTSS is a framework that helps schools improve the performance of all students by identifying needs early and modifying instruction quickly.  This is an important and valuable county-wide initiative that I believe once implemented, will provide supports and opportunities for students to realize those supports more readily due to the fact that this will be a systematic approach to addressing academic issues across the entire school.

I am going to continue to ask that you have consistent conversations with your students about their experiences in school.  The more you opportunities you create for those conversations, the more your student is prepared to have those conversations when they arrive at home.  And as we approach the end of the first semester please continue to reach out to your children’s teachers.  Frequent communication should be occurring on that two-way street.  I want this to be a part of our culture, and our community to be a welcomed part of our school.

It’s South County’s Science and Engineering Fair time again! The Science and Engineering Fair will be February 1st at South County High School starting at 3pm.

In order to make this Fair an annual success, the Science team relies on assistance from teacher and community volunteers. We are asking that if you want to support our school and science program by volunteering and judging to please sign up.   Please contact Ms. Shanna Mayorov (smayorov@fcps.edu) if you would like to volunteer and for more information.

We appreciate your time, talent and service.

Well please enjoy the long weekend and rest and relax.  I thank you for our continued support of all we do.  Take care.  #OneStallion
