Parent Teen Book Club

Another Successful Parent Teen Book Club

Parent Teen Book Club had an exciting evening sharing great books and thoughtful discussion.  We had the pleasure to be joined by Brian Herberger, author of Miss E and Cross Country who presented and shared his journey about becoming an author and met with individuals to discuss his books.

The third installment of the Parent Teen Book Club for the 2018-2019 school year will be held on April 10, 2019.  Registration opens on March 1, 2019.   Please email Karen Radcliffe keradcliffe@fcps.edu with any questions.

*If you participated on Wednesday evening and did not return your books, please do so to Room 111.  Thank you!

Student Services Updates

If your family has been affected by the government shutdown and you may need assistance to support your family needs, please contact your child’s school counselor.

Academic Advising season will quickly be coming upon us once we return from Winter Break!  This is the time for your child to select their courses for the upcoming school year.  Although the next school year seem to be in the distant future, we use this selection data for planning and staffing our schools with the needs of our students.  As course selection sheets come home and you are helping your child determine the best level/fit for each core area, be sure to consult with your child’s current teacher for help with recommending placement.  You child will meet 1:1 with their designated school counselor in the upcoming months to go over these selections in detail and to discuss their individual academic goals.  Franklin Middle School is fortunate to participate in an online course selection, along with Chantilly High School, where students of Rising 7th and 8th and 9th Grade Chantilly HS students, will be able to select their courses online through their individual Student VUE accounts as well as through paper course selection sheets.  Oakton HS students will be selecting their courses on paper, the traditional style for this school year.  More information will be shared at OHS and CHS curriculum nights and information will be given to your child on Monday, January 28th when the high schools come to visit Franklin.

Within this timeframe, there will be some important dates that we want you to keep on your calendar:

Dates for Rising 9th grade students/parents:

CHS/OHS School Counselors visit Franklin Middle School to meet with all 8th grade students on Monday, January 28th (HS Course selection sheets come home)

Dates for Rising 8th grade students/parents:

FMS school counselors will be meeting with our current 7th grade students 1:1 through their Science classes the week of February 25th for academic advising and course selection.

Dates for Rising 7th grade students/parents:

AAP Preview Night (for parents interested in our AAP program) – Thursday, January 24th at 6:00pm

If you have any questions, please contact our Director of Student Services, Tami Stubblefield TLStubblefie@fcps.edu or your child’s school counselor.

Upcoming Testing for Students

NAEP

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) will take place at Franklin on Thursday, February 14, 2019.  A random sample of 8th grade students has been selected to participate in this assessment which measures student achievement nationally.  A letter to parents was sent home in December if your student has been selected to participate.  Students that complete the assessment receive 90 minutes of community services time.

WIDA

Attention ESOL Parents/Guardians:

The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs test will be administered to all Franklin ESOL students (Levels 1-5) January 22-February 19, 2019. This test is comprised of four different components—Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking—that all ESOL students are required to complete. It will be helpful if you can avoid appointments which may take your child out of school on or during the testing dates.   Also, it will help your child perform his or her best if he or she has had a good night’s rest, a healthy breakfast, and comes to school with a positive attitude.

SpeakUp Survey

The Speak Up National Research project annually polls K-12 students, parents and educators about the role of technology for learning in and out of school and represents the largest collection of authentic, unfiltered stakeholder voice on digital learning. Since 2003, over 3 million K-12 students, parents, teachers, librarians, principals, technology leaders and district administrators have shared their views and ideas through Speak Up. Education, business and policy leaders report that they use the data regularly to inform federal, state and local education programs.

Please visit this link to take the survey. For more information about the survey, visit https://www.fcps.edu/node/35424.

School Climate Survey

This winter the Virginia Center for School Safety in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education is conducting the Virginia Secondary School Climate Survey of students and teachers.  This survey is part of the annual School Safety Audit for all public schools in Virginia. The purpose of this survey is to measure school discipline, student support, student engagement, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and orderly school environment. A random sample of 25 students from each grade level at Franklin MS has been chosen to participate in this survey in February.  If your student is one of the random participants, a letter was mailed to your home in early January.  Please contact Lea Fadden at Lea.Fadden@fcps.edu with any questions.

Here are a few reminders about the care and maintenance of your child's FCPSOn HP ProBooks.

  • Computers should be restarted each Tuesday and Friday to keep them up to date.
  • Please make sure students shutdown computers if sitting idle for long periods of time.
  • Please make sure students are charging computers each night.
  • Remember, if charger cable or case are lost or damaged, families are responsible for reimbursing the school in order to get a new one.
  • Students can fix issues on their own by opening up System Center from the Windows start menu here at school.

Screen time at school is also a concern for Teachers.  I wanted to let you, the parents, know that devices at school are not used continuously all day.  There's a mix of screen time and non-screen time in each class. The time on the devices is more about student creation and engaging students to explore the curriculum they are learning.  They also use the devices to engage in class discussions and collaborative work.
