CELEBRATING NO NAME-CALLING WEEK, JANUARY 22-24, 2019
This is the first year Longfellow Middle School will be organizing national No Name-Calling Week! Sponsored by the students of Sources of Strength and GSA, this week is structured to bring awareness and support to end name-calling and bullying in schools.
Originally founded in 2004 with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, and evaluated by GLSEN research, No Name-Calling Week was inspired by James Howe’s novel, The Misfits, about students who, after experiencing name-calling, run for student council on a No Name-Calling platform.
The week is rooted in the idea of #KindnessInAction — not merely recognizing the importance of kindness, but actively adding kindness into our every action!
Each day students are being encouraged to participate in a themed awareness day with a chance to win a prize in their 1st period class.
Tuesday, January 22nd - School Pride Day: We are all unique and different, but we at least have one similarity: we are members of the Longfellow community. Wear blue or rainbow to show your Longfellow pride. Wednesday, January 23rd - Wear Red Day: Red signifies a stop sign and is a message to stop name calling and bullying. Thursday, January 24th - Team Up Against Bullying: Wear your favorite sport, team, or club jersey.
SCREENAGERS MOVIE AT LONGFELLOW
Monday, January 28, 6 p.m. Lecture Hall Are your teenagers spending too much time in front of screens? Wonder how this is affecting their development including the effects on the brain? SCREENAGERS is a movie developed by primary care physician and documentary filmmaker Dr. Delaney Ruston as she identifies the issues and effects of too much screen time on our teens and their developing brains. Bring the entire family to this important movie event with a panel discussion immediately following the movie. SCREENAGERS is about the impact of the digital age on children and how to help them minimize harmful effects and find balance. After seeing the film, teens and parents feel more confident and better equipped to establish balance around screen time. Our panel discussion will include members of the school and local mental health community and offer insights and advice on how to minimize the impact of too much screen time on our teenagers. Come hear what people who work with our teens everyday are seeing in their practices and in our school community. This movie is appropriate for anyone age 10 and older. We are offering to pre-order Domino's pizza and chicken to make it easier for families to attend. Click here to pre-order your dinner and show up anytime between 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. to eat before the movie. You do not want to miss this important movie and discussion. For further information about SCREENAGERS, please visit their website.
