Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand Presents FCPS Budget for Fiscal Year 2020

Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand presented a $3.0 billion Proposed Budget for the 2019-20 school year (Fiscal Year 2020) to the Fairfax County School Board at its business meeting on January 10. The FY 2020 Proposed Budget, with a focus on employee compensation, represents an increase of $117.4 million, or 4.1 percent, over the FY 2019 Approved Budget.

“Student success begins and ends with a highly qualified teacher in every classroom, which is why the FY 2020 Proposed Budget continues to focus on our strategic priority of recruiting and retaining great teachers through market competitive compensation,” said Brabrand. “The proposed budget includes a $55.2 million investment in the teacher salary scales which is the final phase of a multi-year plan to bring teacher salaries to the market average and includes a 1.0 percent market scale adjustment. Our goal is to ensure that every student–by name and by need–receives an excellent and equitable education in a 21st-century learning environment with the very best teachers.”

This past week our students focused on HOPE & OPTIMISM.

Hope and optimism represent a state of hopefulness and confidence about the future (both short and long term). People with this strength are future oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. They keep a positive attitude despite setbacks – and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping-stone to achieve their goals.

Optimistic people are sometimes regarded as naïve or even delusional. And, yes, there are some people who are illogically optimistic, which can be detrimental. However, optimism is not about wearing rose-colored glasses and rolling over when the going gets tough. It’s about staying focused on the good in any situation – allowing you to be aware of opportunities and accountable for your emotions.
