6th Grade Community Service Project

As part of their 6th grade winter party, our students joined forces with the Fairfax County Police Department to build tricycles to donate to local charities. These tricycles were donated to children whose parents have limited financial resources.

We are so thankful for our collaboration with the FCPD through this project!

We Made FCPS News!

At GFES, we have a growing number of students who use assistive technology devices to communicate.   These students are included throughout the day in many of our general education classroom settings.  In order to help all of our students become familiar with the devices, our special education department worked with our Assistive Technology Specialist to develop a communication week for students in grades 2, 4 and 5.   This week is designed with the ultimate goal of helping our students gain an appreciation and understanding of their classmates who use alternative methods to communicate.

FCPS News wrote a news summary to be sent out to all FCPS employees and families.   Please click here to read!

Attention parents of grades 4-6 students

Before the winter break, you were notified that your child would be taking a statewide Student School Climate Survey mandated by the Virginia Department of Education. This survey was scheduled to be conducted from Monday, January 14, 2019 to Friday, February 8, 2019. Based on feedback from principals and school administrators, Dr. Brabrand, in collaboration and consultation with State Superintendent, has granted an exemption of the VDOE Student School Climate Survey for this year. Therefore, the VDOE Student School Climate survey will not be administered.

If you have any questions, please contact the Great Falls ES office.

SOL Calendar - Mark Your Calendar

Students in grades 3-6 will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests from May 6th - May 17th with makeups and retakes extending to June 7th. It will be very helpful if you can avoid appointments and trips which may take your child out of school during this time period.SOL tests measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills specified in the Virginia Standards of Learning. Content areas will be tested according to the schedule.Thank you for your support and assistance with our SOL test administration.

Rise Against Hunger

Rise Against Hunger Event-Save the Date Event Date: Saturday, February 9, 2019

Please click here to sign up for the Rise Against Hunger volunteer slots with Signup Genius.  We would love to have those of you who are able to come and join us pack meals for this great cause.  Here’s a picture from last year’s event!

We encourage ALL of our students to donate to the cause through our "Learn to Earn" initiative.  Your students will 'learn' more about Rise Against Hunger this week.  We do not want your children to simply ask you for money.  We encourage them to 'earn' the money through additional chores, saving part of their allowance, or raising money through other creative ways.  When they earn the money, they have a choice to keep the money or donate it to this worthy cause. Whether they donate $.29, $1.00 or $10.00, they are never too young to make a difference in the world.

Langley Area Honor Band Concert

Please join us for a great evening of music on Friday, January 25th at Langley High School at 6:30 p.m. with the Langley Area Honor Band. The concert is free and all are welcome!

This group is made up of the most advanced elementary school band students from Churchill Road, Colvin Run, Forestville, Great Falls, and Spring Hill elementary schools. Students have been preparing their music at home and with their school directors over the last month and will spend the afternoon of January 25th rehearsing together before the evening performance. The concert will be conducted by Mr. Matt Baker and Ms. Alex Singer, the directors at Cooper Middle School.
