Dear Providence Families,
Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a fantastic winter break, and I look forward to working with you again this year. We had a wonderful first week back, with students and teachers fully engaged in learning and growing from the moment of our return. While our intuition might suggest that students won’t be eager to return, I can assure you that there were many moments as teachers and students greeted each other after the long break.
I want to start by sharing some great news about our school nominees for our Outstanding Teacher. Fairfax County Public Schools started a program several years ago to recognize staff and faculty members who set a high standard and are exemplars in their professional areas. Later this winter, I will share the nominees and school winners in several other areas. Today, I want to share that Allieh Kheradmand, Courtney Buchanan, Jeannie McKeown, Beth Olexa, and Melissa Sutter were nominated by our school community as our Outstanding Teacher. Our in-school committee looked at the nomination forms and selected Allieh Kheradmand as our school candidate. All of the nominees were excellent teachers, and we congratulate them all on their nomination. Ms. Kheradmand will move forward to represent our school at the pyramid level in the months ahead, and we know that she is a great candidate. Congratulations, Ms. Kheradmand!
Also, I have an update to a previous message. Before the winter break, we notified you that your child would be taking a statewide Student School Climate Survey mandated by the Virginia Department of Education. This survey was scheduled to be conducted from Monday, January 14, 2019 to Friday, February 8, 2019. Based on feedback from principals and school administrators, Dr. Brabrand, in collaboration and consultation with State Superintendent, has granted an exemption of the VDOE Student School Climate Survey for this year. Therefore, the VDOE Student School Climate survey will not be administered.
Finally, we are fully into the winter weather season, and want to enlist your help in keeping everyone warm and in possession of their belongings. Please be sure that your child has a warm jacket, a hat, and gloves, all labeled with his or her name, each day. Unless there is a wind chill advisory, wet weather, or extremely cold temperatures, we follow the FCPS guidelines and aim to hold outdoor recess as scheduled. We also have many unlabeled items in our lost and found, and we can more easily reunite students with their belongings when names are written in the item.
We look forward to a great winter of learning, and appreciate your support, as always.
Sincerely,
Dan Phillips
Proud Providence Principal
