January 16th Panther Press

Dear Spring Hill Families,

It’s so nice to be back at school!

Our staff continues to work diligently to support your child each day. We feel grateful to partner with you. Please read through the following important information:

VDOE Student School Climate Survey Cancellation

Before the winter break, I notified you that your child would be taking a statewide Student School Climate Survey mandated by the Virginia Department of Education. This survey was scheduled to be conducted from Monday, January 14, 2019 to Friday, February 8, 2019. Based on feedback from principals and school administrators, Dr. Brabrand, in collaboration and consultation with State Superintendent, has granted an exemption of the VDOE Student School Climate Survey for this year. Therefore, the VDOE Student School Climate survey will not be administered.

If you have any questions, please contact the school at 703-506-3400.

Sincerely,

Sarah C. Aiello

Proud Principal

WordMasters Challenge

Several teams representing Spring Hill Elementary School achieved Highest Honors in the recent WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. The third grade team scored an impressive 192 points out of a possible 200 in the first of three meets this year, placing first in the nation. In addition, the fifth grade team scored 191 points out of 200 on the first meet, placing seventh in the nation. Finally, a team of fourth graders finished ninth nationwide with a score of 190 points.

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, third graders Oviyah Ramakrishnan, Aarehan Rustagi and Anoushka Sarathy, fourth graders Inger Logan and Renee Shi, fifth graders Abigail Davis, Maddie Smedberg and Ayla Zhang, and sixth graders McKenna Bryan, Aria Patnaik, Hayley Varacalli and Zaib Zahir each earned a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Nationally, only 11 third graders, 58 fourth graders, 54 fifth graders and 98 sixth graders achieved this result.

Other students from Spring Hill Elementary School who achieved outstanding results in the meet include: third graders Edward Ahn, Anika Banerjee, Alex Bechtle, Luke Chang, Alice Guo and Anya Tong; fourth graders Mindy Bao, Rachel Ji, Max Kerzner, Alec McFadyen, Mackenzie Ross and Aiden Thornsbury; fifth graders Justin Champoux, Jiayu Chen, Megan Conner, Cat Coronado and Brendan Li; and sixth graders Arya Bharath, Birka Chen, Ian Doss and Isabella Robertson.

The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by Their Language Arts Teacher

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

The WordMasters Challenge™ program is administered by a company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. Further information is available at the company’s website: http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com.

Spring Hill Science Fair

Science Fair1

Have you ever noticed how Science is all around us? It’s everywhere! Can you think of any science question? Yes?! Then turn it into a science project, bring it to Spring Hill, and maybe you’ll win 2 free movie tickets for the best science project in your grade!

Who: You! Yes, You! All Spring Hill students can participate.

What: Think of any idea related to science and turn it into a science project; an experiment, an object, some pictures with a description… whatever you’d like! Just as long as it’s related to science, it can be entered to win prizes.

When: All projects will be due Mon 2/11/19 before school. And then students in Grades K-3 will stay after school to explain their projects to the judges on Mon 2/11, and students in Grades 4-6 will stay after school on Tues 2/12.

Why: Because Science is all around us, and we want to celebrate and award prizes at our Science is Fun Gala on Wed 2/13/19 from 6-7pm.

Remember, one person from every grade will win 2 free movie tickets for the best science project. So be thinking of science ideas so you can participate. More details will follow later.

Rise Against Hunger

Rise Against Hunger

In partnership with Rise Against Hunger, the Langley pyramid elementary, middle and high schools are coming together on Saturday, February 9th at Colvin Run Elementary School with a goal to prepare 100,000 meal packages for schools and orphanages around the world.

Our goal this year is to raise $29,000.  We are accepting student donations at school January 11th through January 25th.  Parents and families are encouraged to donate online through January 25th.  Each meal package costs only 29 cents to make.  For just $15, we can make about 50 meal packages; $30 will make over 100 meal packages and $100 will pay nearly 350 meal packages.  When rehydrated, each meal package feeds 5-6 people.  Throughout our efforts, our students will understand how their family’s contribution will help impact over 500,000 people.  This is a wonderful way for our students to better understand how their role in a school community impacts their global community.

As many of you remember, last year’s Rise Against Hunger event was a huge success and provided a wonderful service learning opportunity for children and adults of all ages.  The Langley pyramid schools raised funding to provide 100,008 meals for children and families in Mozambique.

Donations

  • Make your tax-deductible donation today here.
  • Each student is encouraged to donate loose change or money that they earn and wish to donate to Rise Against Hunger
  • On January 10th, your child will bring home a small Rise Against Hunger collection box in which they can start to save money to be donated in January as part of our “Learn to Earn” fundraising efforts. “Learn to Earn” is the initiative we promote to encourage students to earn money they would like to donate by: taking on additional chores, setting aside part of their allowance, helping shovel snow, or any innovative way they can think of.  There will be two collection dates: January 17th and January 24th
  • If your company makes matching contributions, please consider having them join you in making a tax-deductible donation today at: http://events.stophungernow.org/LangleyPyramid2019 and help us Rise Against Hunger
  • We package meals based on the amount of money raised, and we need your help to reach our goal.  With each meal feeding 5-6 people, this is a wonderful event that impacts 500,000 individuals around the world and broadens the perspective of our students and families.

Volunteer Registration

We need your help packaging the meals.  Click here to register to volunteer for this exciting family-friendly event.  The link is for Spring Hill Elementary families.

    • If you have children at multiple schools, please register your child with their current school.  (Smith family has 2 children at SHES, 1 at CMS, and 1 at LHS).

*Volunteers must register for the event and pick a time slot.  Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

About Rise Against Hunger

Rise Against Hunger is a 4-star rated organization that sends nutrient-rich, dehydrated meal packages to developing countries around the world.  In those countries, the meal packages are delivered to families through the schools.  In developing countries, children may not attend school to receive a formal education, so in part to this program, more children are being encouraged to attend school to receive a hot meal at school and additional meal packages for their families.  As an additional benefit, more children are also receiving a formal education.  Click here to learn more about Rise Against Hunger.
