Dogwood Café Reflect and Resent

practice

In our first week back from winter break, our Dogwood Café hosts, Mr. P and Ms. H along with support for Ms. Novack, one of our assistant principals, met with students to reflect on what is important in the cafeteria.  Students had the opportunity to discuss and share what it looks like and sounds like to be principled and caring in the Café. Students practiced safely entering the Dogwood Café, walking and safely going through the line.  We have seen a wonderful shift in our Café since this extra practice!  For the first time ever, 19 classes won our Golden Broom Award!  Students earn point for being respectful of our staff, each other and our space.  The classes with the most points at the end of the week are awarded the Golden Broom Award.  There is no limit to the number of awards given out.  We hope your child's class wins this week!

When Your Child Is Sick

School Health Room Guidelines

Here are some guidelines to help parents decide when their children should stay home from school.

  • Fever - if a student has as temperature of 100 degrees or more, they need to stay home until they have been without a fever for a full 24 hours. This means that if your child is coming home today with an elevated temperature, they should not attend school tomorrow. Fever should be evaluated WITHOUT the use of medications to control the fever. If a fever goes away only with the use of medicine, the child should stay home.
  • Stomach problems- students should stay home for 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Rash- students with an undiagnosed rash should see a health care provider for an accurate diagnosis. Please inform the School Health Aide or Public Health Nurse if you child has a chronic skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis.

You may receive a form called a Health Referral that a Health Care provider can fill out to tell you when the student may return to school. Please send this to the School Health Room when they come back.

When you call the school to report your child’s absence, please call as soon as you realize that they will not be attending. Leave as much information as possible, such as if they have any of the symptoms mentioned above or a diagnosis if they have seen a health care provider. A student needs to be called in to the office every day that they are absent.

For any questions please contact the Public Health Nurse assigned to this school, Hope Luong PHN, MSN, RN, NCSN 703-639-7879 or email at Hope.Luong@fairfaxcounty.gov

Learning to Play an Instrument

string

According to Kent State University there are many benefits of learning to play an instrument. A few notable benefits are:

  • Music Builds Intellectual Curiosity
  • Increases Coordination
  • Develops Creative Thinking
  • Kids Stay Engaged in Schools
  • Improves Efforts in Other Academic Areas

Did you know that at Dogwood each fourth grader has the wonderful opportunity of learning to play a stings instrument like violin, viola or cello?  In the picture featured you can see our fourth graders practicing.

Our music program grows for fifth and sixth graders as they can continue on with the instrument they are learning or make another choice.  Our fifth and sixth graders may also choose to learn a band instrument like flute, drums, trumpet and there are more options too.  We want all students in our upper grades to benefit from playing an instrument.

Before the winter break, you were notified that your child would be taking a statewide Student School Climate Survey mandated by the Virginia Department of Education. This survey was scheduled to be conducted from Monday, January 14, 2019 to Friday, February 8, 2019. Based on feedback from principals and school administrators, Dr. Brabrand, in collaboration and consultation with State Superintendent, has granted an exemption of the VDOE Student School Climate Survey for this year. Therefore, the VDOE Student School Climate survey will not be administered.
