Congratulations to Oak Hill's Staff members who were nominated for FCPS awards.
We have had an eventful start to our 2019 with weather delays and cancellations! We understand that transitions back to school can be hard for some children. Our staff has done a wonderful job taking that into consideration when they hold their Morning Meetings and greet children. Kids really are resilient and have shown us how quickly they can reunite with friends and their teacher for a successful day! Please keep in mind that on delayed openings we are unable to open the doors before 10:20am (2 hour delay). Staff have not arrived to supervise children prior to the 10:20am start. In order to keep children safe and supervised, please do not “drop off” children in the bus loop.
We are so proud of all of our FCPS Award Winners from Oak Hill! Many of our staff were nominated by parents. We thank you for taking the extra time to write such kind words of how our staff have made a difference in your child’s life! We celebrated with all of our staff with a breakfast and red carpet treatment!
Our staff and students have had a fun month of January with our school-wide Spirit Days. Please see below for the list of spirit days this week and next.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill. My door is always open!
Sincerely,
Holly DeVore, Principal

When FCPS announces a two-hour delayed opening, School Age Child Care (SACC) centers will open at 8 a.m. for children enrolled in the Before School session. The one-hour delayed opening of SACC is to provide additional time for road conditions to improve and be adequately assessed, and parking lots and sidewalks to be cleared as needed.
Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand presented a $3.0 billion Proposed Budget for the 2019-20 school year (Fiscal Year 2020) to the Fairfax County School Board at its business meeting on January 10. The FY 2020 Proposed Budget, with a focus on employee compensation, represents an increase of $117.4 million, or 4.1 percent, over the FY 2019 Approved Budget.
“Student success begins and ends with a highly qualified teacher in every classroom, which is why the FY 2020 Proposed Budget continues to focus on our strategic priority of recruiting and retaining great teachers through market competitive compensation,” said Brabrand. “The proposed budget includes a $55.2 million investment in the teacher salary scales which is the final phase of a multi-year plan to bring teacher salaries to the market average and includes a 1.0 percent market scale adjustment. Our goal is to ensure that every student–by name and by need–receives an excellent and equitable education in a 21st-century learning environment with the very best teachers.”

Don't forget - students will be going outside for recess in cold weather, so please remember to send them to school with warm jackets, gloves/mittens and hats. Don't forget to make sure all items are labeled with your child's name.
The Oak Hill Library is looking for parent volunteers to help conduct an inventory of our library collection. Parents are needed to scan the barcode on our library books. Please click here to access the Sign-Up Genius for times and dates to volunteer. Additional dates may be included as the inventory process unfolds. If you don’t find a date that works in your schedule at this time, please check back later as more dates may be added. Thank you for your help!

Ask your students about some of the amazing technology tools they use for learning. We hope you have seen some of the many ways students are able to create original works with the Google Suite products (Docs, Slides, Draw, Sheets, Maps), but these aren’t our only tools. Two of our other favorites are Flipgrid and Padlet. Flipgrid is a video sharing tool that gives every student a voice. We use it for digital reading responses, book talks, reading poems, fluency practice, responses to social studies and science questions, number talks, explaining math thinking, and much more. Students love being able to articulate their thoughts without the stress of the spotlight. By amplifying all student voices it creates a more equitable learning experience for all. Padlet is an electronic bulletin board that allows students to post “notes” on a common board. Their notes can contain links, video, audio, and any type of document. It is an awesome forum for students to collaborate on shared projects, to collect resources, to ask questions, or to brainstorm as a group. You can read more about both Flipgrid and Padlet on Common Sense Education.
