Early dismissal clock

3 Hour Early Dismissal

This Friday, January 18, students will be dismissed 3 hours early at 11:15AM (FCPS-designated school planning day).  In order to complete lunch periods for all students, we will operate on a modified B-day schedule.  Students will eat lunch in their classrooms, however, those students wishing to purchase an FCPS lunch will be allowed to go through the lunch line to purchase a "grab and go" lunch and return with it to their classroom to eat.  We highly encourage students to bring a lunch from home on these early dismissal days in order to maximize their dining time.

Report Card Distribution

Second quarter ends January 24, 2019.  As a reminder report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, February 1, 2019. Don’t forget to ask your child for his/her report card on Friday, February 1, 2019.   If you do not receive a report card, please contact the Student Services office at 703-925-3613. If you have specific questions concerning your child’s grades, contact his/her teacher directly.

SCA Fundraiser

The SCA is holding a fundraiser through Shadowland Laser Adventures in Chantilly. We have 200 discounted passes to sell. The price to play one game of laser tag is normally $8.50 but we’re selling one game passes for $7. All passes will be sold through Myschoolbucks from January 14-February 1. Families can buy multiple passes. Passes will be distributed to students on February 12 and are valid for one year.

Guest Speaker at Next PTA Meeting

Thursday, January 31st at 6:30pm in Library

Please join us for a brief monthly PTA meeting immediately followed by a workshop presented by Ann Dolin, founder of Educational Connections Tutoring, on Middle School Excellence: Top Tips for Getting Your Kids Organized, Motivated and Focused.

In this practical workshop, you will learn:

  •  How to foster independence and study habits.
  •  Ways to find a balance between too much and not enough.
  •  Simple techniques to encourage self-advocacy.
  •  Practical ways to tame procrastination and recommendations for the questions to ask (word-for-word) to spark motivation.
  •  How timers, tasks, and apps can be used to help your child succeed in middle school and high school
  •  Systems you can use at home to improve executive functioning skills such as organization and time management.
  •  And, how to do all this by opening lines of communication instead of being the bad guy.

The RCMS PTA is pleased to host this useful workshop open to all RCMS parents and we look forward to seeing you there.

Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night

Parents and Guardians of students who will attend Rachel Carson Middle School beginning in the fall of 2019  are cordially invited to RCMS to attend the Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. This program is designed to provide parents an opportunity to learn about the middle school course selection process, the academic and elective course offerings and requirements, and afterschool programs that are available.

The program for parents participating in special education will begin at 5:30PM in the library.

At 6:15PM, the elective showcase for parents will begin.  Parents should report directly to RCMS cafeteria for an elective showcase. Have you ever wondered what goes on in the elective classes? Parents, this is your opportunity to learn more about the different elective options at Rachel Carson Middle and ask teachers questions before you and your child select electives for the next year. Elective teachers will be introducing information on their exciting and engaging classes for school year 2019-2020.

At 7:00PM, the general session for parents will begin.  Parents should report directly to RCMS Gymnasium for the general program overview. The Curriculum Night will conclude at 8:15PM.

It is our hope that you will gain valuable information to facilitate conversations with your child as you help them prepare to make appropriate course selections.

For your convenience, overflow parking will be available at Nysmith School.

If Fairfax County Public Schools cancels evening activities for Wednesday, January 30, 2019 this event will be rescheduled for Wednesday, February 6, 2019. If you have any questions, please contact Rachel Carson Middle School Student Services at 703-925-3614.
